The Investigation Level of Hopelesness About Mathematics Course of Secondary School Senior Students

Abstract

Geçmişten günümüze kadar birçok insan matematiğe karşı kaygılı ve ön yargılı olmuştur. Yaşamın her alanında ihtiyaç duyduğumuz matematik; öğrenim hayatımız boyunca da ders olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Özellikle ülkemizde uygulanan önemli sınavlarda gittikçe değer kazanan matematik, sınavlara hazırlanan öğrenciler için umutsuzluk ve ciddi bir problem oluşturmaktadır. Öğrencilerin matematiğe karşı olan umutsuzluk düzeylerinin artmasının önlenmesi ve çözüm yollarının geliştirilmesine yönelik çalışmalara katkı sağlaması ve geliştirilmesi büyük önem arz etmektedir. Bu araştırmanın amacı: Van ili merkez ilçelerinde yer alan ortaöğretim son sınıf öğrencilerini matematik dersine yönelik umutsuzluk düzeyleri bazı demografik değişiklikler açısından incelenecektir. Araştırma Van ilimerkez ilçelerinde yer alan belli ortaöğretim son sınıfta öğrenim görmekte olan öğrenciler arasında rastgele seçilen 219 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Katılımcıların matematik dersine yönelik umutsuzluk düzeylerini belirlemek için matematik dersine uyarlanan 'Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçeği' ve demografik bilgi formu kullanılmıştır. Katılımcılara uygulanacak olan form verilerin analizleri için; frekans çizelgeleri, t-testi ve tek yönlü varyan analizi (ANOVA) analizinden yararlanılarak yapılmıştır. ANOVA sonucunda gruplar arasında anlamlı bir fark tespit edildiğinde bu farklılığın hangi guruplar arasında olduğunu Scheffe-Coklu test yardımıyla anlaşılmıştır. Analizlerden elde edilen sonuçlara dayanılarak ortaöğretim son sınıf öğrencilerinde matematiğe karşı bakış açıları, matematik öğrenimi, matematik umutsuzluk düzeyleri, korku veya kaygıları, ön yargıları ve matematik öğretimine yönelik öneriler sunulmuştur.

Up to now, many people have been anxious about and biased towards mathematics. Mathematics needed in all aspects of life appears as a course throughout our education life. Mathematics, which gains more and more value especially in important exams applied in our country, constitutes a serious problem and creates a desperate situation for students preparing for the exams. It is of great importance to improve and contribute to the studies that prevent increased levels of hopelessness against mathematics and develop solutions for this problem. The purpose of this study is to examine the despair levels of secondary school senior students in the central districts of Van province in terms of some demographic changes. The research consists of 219 students randomly selected from the students studying in the last year of certain secondary education institutions in the central districts of Van province. The adapted type of 'Beck Hopelessness Scale' to mathematics and demographic information form were used to determine the hopelessness levels of the participants for the mathematics cFor the analysis of the form data to be applied to the participants; frequency charts, t-test and one-way variant analysis (ANOVA) were used. On condition of finding a significant difference between the groups by ANOVA, the Scheffe-Multiple test was used to figure out among which groups the difference occurred. Based on the results obtained from the analyzes, secondary school senior students were presented with views on mathematics, mathematics learning, mathematics hopelessness levels, fear, anxiety or prejudies about mathematics, and mathematics teaching.
