The Analysis of Turkish Textbooks in Terms of Vocabulary Teaching and the Evalutation of Them According To Teacher's View

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkçe ders kitaplarının kelime öğretimi açısından incelenmesi ve öğretmen görüşlerine göre değerlendirilmesidir. Nitel araştırma yöntemine göre düzenlenen bu çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak doküman inceleme ve yapılandırılmış görüşme kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın dokümanı 2020-2021 eğitim-öğretim yılında Diyarbakır ilinde okutulan ortaokul Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki kelime öğretimi etkinlikleridir. Türkçe öğretmenlerinin kelime öğretimi uygulamaları ile ilgili görüşlerini belirlemek için ise 6 soru ve bu sorulara bağlı alt sorulardan oluşan yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubunda Diyarbakır ilinde görev yapan 28 Türkçe öğretmeni yer almıştır. Elde edilen veriler içerik analizi yapılarak çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre kelime öğretimi uygulamalarının sınıf seviyelerine göre dengeli bir dağılım göstermediği belirlenmiştir. En çok rastlanan kelime öğretimi uygulamalarının sözlükten yararlanma, kelimenin anlamını tahmin etme uygulamaları olduğu görülmüştür. Çalışmaya katılan Türkçe öğretmenleri ders kitaplarındaki kelime öğretimi uygulamalarına hâkimdir. Öğretmenler kelime öğretimine ayrılan sürenin yetersiz olduğu görüşündedir. Katılımcılara göre öğrenciler kelime öğretimi etkinliklerinde sorun yaşamakta, bunun en önemli nedeni olarak da yeni öğrenilen kelimelerin kullanılmaması ve metinlerin dilinin ağır olması görülmektedir. Türkçe öğretmenlerine göre ders kitaplarında en çok kullanılan kelime öğretimi uygulamaları kelimenin anlamını tahmin etme, en az ise bulmacadır. Öğretmenlerin en yetersiz buldukları kelime öğretimi uygulaması anlamından hareketle kelimeyi tahmin etmedir. Öğretmenler en çok yabancı dillerden Türkçeye yerleşmiş ve sosyal hayatta kullanılmayan kelimelerin öğretiminde zorlanmaktadır. Katılımcılara göre kelime öğretiminde kitaplardaki etkinlikler dışında en etkili olan uygulamalar eğitsel oyunlar, görsellerden yararlanma ve yaratıcı drama gibi uygulamalardır.

The aim of this study is to examine Turkish language textbooks in terms of teaching vocabulary and to assess them based on the opinions of the instructors. Document review and structured interview were used as data collection tools in this study, designed according to the qualitative research method. The documents to be reviewed in the study consist of the vocabulary teaching activities within in the frame of the secondary school Turkish language textbooks used in Diyarbakır in the academic year of 2020-2021. In order to determine the opinions of Turkish language instructors regarding the practices of vocabulary teaching, a structured interview form consisting of 6 questions and sub-questions related to these questions was used. The study group is composed of 28 instructors specialized on Turkish language teaching and working in Diyarbakir. The obtained data were analyzed by means of content analysis. As far as the findings of the research are concerned, it was determined that the vocabulary teaching practices did not show a balanced distribution depending on the grade levels. It has been observed that utilizing a dictionary and guessing the meaning of the word are among the most prevalent vocabulary teaching practices. The Turkish language instructors participating in the study have a good command of the vocabulary teaching practices taking place in the textbooks. The instructors think that the time allocated to teaching vocabulary is insufficient. According to the opinions of the participants, students have problems in vocabulary learning activities due to failure to use the newly learned words and difficulty of the language seen in the texts constitute the most significant reason of such problem. From the point of view of Turkish language instructors, the most common vocabulary teaching practices observed in the textbooks are guessing the meaning of the word, and the least common practice is the puzzle. In the opinion of the instructors, the most inadequate practice on vocabulary teaching is guessing the word based on the meaning of it. The instructors have the most difficulty in teaching words with foreign origin that are part of Turkish and that are not used in social life. According to the participants, the most effective practices in vocabulary teaching apart from the activities taking part in the textbooks can be considered as educational games, using visual tools and creative drama.
