Investigation of Vitamin A, D and E Levels in the Children With Giardiosis
Abstract
Deneme grubundaki 49 hastanın 20'sinde (%40.8) vitamin A, beşinde (%10.2) vitamin D eksikliği tespit edildi.
This study was performed to investigate the levels of the vitamins A, D and E in the children with giardiosis. The study was carried out on 74 patients, 43 boys and 31 girls, aging 2-16 years who were admitted to the Pediatric Clinic of Research Hospital of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University between the dates of July 2008 and June 2009. The examination of stool samples was made in Parasitology Laboratory of the hospital. Experiment group was included total of 49 people (26 boys, 23 girls) who were positive in terms of G.intestinalis. The control group was included 25 people (17 boys, 8 girls) who were free of any parasitic agent. In experiment group, vitamin A and D deficiency was determined in 20 (40.8%) and five patients (10.2%), respectively. In the control group, vitamin A and D deficiency was determined in six (24%) and eight individuals (32%), respectively. Statistically significant (p<0.05) relationship betweenG.intestinalis positivity and vitamin A deficiency was determined. However, insignificant difference (p>0.05) between sex and vitamin A, D and E deficiency was observed. In addition, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between age and vitamin deficiency was observed. It was concluded that physicians should made supplementation of vitamin A beside the anti-giardia agent treatment of the patients with giardiosis.
