The Effect of Augmented Reality Use on Misconceptions in Science 7th Grade Solar System and Beyond Unit
Abstract
Augmented reality is a technology based on enriching the real environment with image, sound, GPS and similar data. The aim of this study is to determine the misconceptions of students about the subjects and concepts in the 'Solar System and Beyond' unit taught in the 7th grade of primary school and to examine whether augmented reality applications prepared on these subjects are effective in eliminating these misconceptions. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental application was conducted with 24 7th grade students from Turgut Reis Elementary School in Van city center. Before starting the application, a 3-stage misconception test consisting of 8 questions was developed and applied to the students as a pre-test in order to determine the existing misconceptions of the students. In this way, existing misconceptions were identified. After the pre-test, the lesson was taught by using augmented reality applications related to the concepts in this unit for 3 weeks. The misconception test prepared after the application was reapplied to the students as a post-test and it was examined whether there was any change in the misconceptions of the students. As a result of the examination, it was observed that misconceptions such as shooting stars and comets, which are frequently used in daily life, were the most common misconceptions of the students, and the misconceptions were largely eliminated with augmented reality applications.
