The Effect of Smoking on Mean Platelet Volume and Platelet Numbers

Abstract

Amaç: Ortalama trombosit hacmi (MPV) rutin klinik pratikte trombosit fonksiyonlarını değerlendiren basit ve kolay bir metottur. MPV birçok hastalığın önemli bir belirtecidir. Büyük trombositler küçük trombositlerden daha aktiftirler ve kısalmış kanama zamanı ile ilişkilidirler. Literatürde birkaç çalışmada sigara kullanımının MPV ve trombosit sayısı üzerine etkisi araştırılmış ancak bu çalışma sonuçlarının çelişkili olduğu görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada sigara kullanan ve kullanmayan sağlıklı kişilerde MPV düzeyleri ve trombosit sayısı karşılaştırıldı. Materyal ve Metod: Çalışmamızda Eylül 2012 ile Eylül 2013 tarihleri arasında Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Dursun Odabaş Eğitim Ve Araştırma Hastanesi İç Hastalıkları Polikliniğine başvuran hastaların dosyaları retrospektif olarak incelendi. Çalışmaya, ek hastalığı olmayan ve sigara kullanan 65 olgu (24 kadın ve 41 erkek) ile sigara kullanmayan 60 olgu (30 kadın ve 30 erkek) alındı. Tüm olguların demografik özellikleri (yaş ve cinsiyet) ve nötrofil sayısı, lenfosit sayısı, MPV düzeyleri ve trombosit sayısı kaydedildi. Bulgular: Çalışmamızda sigara kullanan ve kullanmayan hastaların MPV düzeyleri ve trombosit sayısı açısından anlamlı farklılık saptanmadı (p'ler >0.05). Sigara kullanan olgularda MPV ile trombosit sayısı arasında istatistiksel olarak negatif korelasyon saptandı (r=-0.501, p=0.000). Sonuçlar: Sigara kullanan olgularda sigara içiminin MPV düzeyleri ve trombosit sayısı üzerine istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir etkisinin olmadığı tespit edildi. Objective: Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a simple and easy method of assessing platelet function in routine clinical practice. MPV is an important predictor of many diseases; large platelets are more active than small platelets, and they are associated with shortened bleeding times. The data concerning MPV levels and platelet numbers of smoking are controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of smoking on MPV levels and platelet numbers in healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in the department of Internal Medicine of the Medical Faculty Hospital of Yuzuncu Yil University between September 2012 and September 2013. The retrospective study enrolled 65 smoking subjects (24 females and 41 males) and 60 non-smoking subjects (30 females and 30 males). The platelet number and MPV levels in healthy population were reviewed. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the smoking subjects and nonsmoking subjects with respect to the MPV levels and platelet numbers (all, p>0.05). The MPV levels were inversely correlated with the platelet number in the smoking subjects (r=-0.501; p=0.000). Conclusions: There were no significant differences between the smoking subjects and nonsmoking subjects with respect to the MPV levels and platelet numbers. We observed a negative correlation between the MPV levels and the platelet numbers in smoking subjects. Key words: Smoking, platelet numbers, mean platelet volume
