The Effect of Undergraduate Program on Music Teachers' and Prospective Music Teachers' Self-Efficiency
Abstract
This research has been conducted to examine the effects of the music teaching undergraduate curriculum, which came into effect in 2006 and 2018, on the self-efficacy levels of teachers and teacher candidates in music teaching. The music teaching undergraduate program of education faculties has been revised at different times for a variety of reasons and some changes have been made in the content of the program. These changes have been made within the framework of the National Education Development Project in order to comply with the requirements of modern education in the curriculum of the education faculties. However, it is thought that this new regulation may contain new deficiencies or problems in itself. The population of this study, which has been conducted through the scanning model, consists of teachers who graduated from the Fine Arts Education Department, Music Education Departments affiliated to the education faculties of the universities and the fourth-grade music teacher candidates currently studying, and the sample has been selected from four different regions of Turkey, Marmara University, Gazi University, Trabzon University and Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Department, and the fourth-grade teacher candidates who are still studying. Özmenteş's (2011) 'Self-Efficacy Scale for Music Teaching' and 'Personal Information Form' created by the researcher have been used as data collection tools in the research. The problem statement of the research has been determined as 'Do the self-efficacy levels of music teachers and teacher candidates differ according to the curriculum they received undergraduate education and according to some demographic variables?'. At the end of the research, it has been concluded that the self-efficacy score averages of music teachers who graduated from the 2006 curriculum for music teaching are higher than the teachers who graduated from the 2018 curriculum and the fourth-grade teacher candidates who are still studying. Keywords: Undergraduate program, music education, self-efficacy.
