Abstract

This study was conducted out to determine genetic variabilitiy and to select superior walnut trees within seedling population of around of Van Lake in 1993 - 1995. In this study were examined over 25.000 walnut trees with high heterozygosity from point of yield (lateral fruitfulness %), tolerance to anthracnose and nut quality factors. The seedling population of around of Van Lake, exhibits tremendous genetic variation in different aims of walnut breeding. 23 types were selected according to yield, tolerance to anthracnose, diseases and pests and nut quality. In these types average nut weight, varied from 9.36±0.8 to 18.60±1.3 g, kernel weight varied 6.09±0.8 - 9.58±0.8 g, kernel rations varied from 50.89% to 65.17 %, shell thickness varied between 0.91±0.1 - 1.76±0.1 mm and nut diameter varied from 29.93±0.9 to 40.44±1.3 mm.
