Powerty in John Steinbeck's Novels of the Grapes of Wrath, of Mice and Men, the Pearl, Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row

Abstract

John Steinbeck, Amerikan edebiyatında, yaşadığı toplumun sıkıntılarına kulak veren ve bunu yapıtlarında işleyen önemli toplumsal yazarlardan biridir. Steinbeck, yapıtlarıyla, dönemin ekonomik sıkıntılarını ve neden olduğu toplumsal problemleri gözler önüne serer ve gösterdiği bu hassasiyetle dikkat çeker.Amerika Birleşik Devletleri, 1930'lu yıllarda borsanın iflasıyla tarihindeki en etkili ekonomik çöküşü yaşar, bu ekonomik sıkıntılar aynı zamanda toplumsal birçok problemi de beraberinde getirir. Ekonomik sıkıntılar toplumu sınıflara ayırır ve bu en çok orta sınıfı ve işçi sınıfını etkiler. İşçi sınıfı, sorunlarını çözmek için arayışlara girer ve bu arayış, komünist bakış açısını popüler hale getirir. Yaşanan bu olaylar edebiyat alanında da etkili olur, dönemin yapısını ve sıkıntılarını yansıtan toplumsal ve eleştirel yapıtlar ortaya çıkar. John Steinbeck, dönemin Amerikan toplumunu yansıtmaya çalışarak toplumun aynası olur.Bu çalışmada, Büyük Bunalım olarak adlandırılan dönemin neden ve sonuçları, dönemin toplumsal yaşantısı, bu dönemin edebiyata yansıyışı, Steinbeck'in yaşamı, edebi kariyeri ve Steinbeck romanlarının genel özellikleri, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, The Pearl, Tortilla Flatt ve Cannery Row adlı yapıtlarında Amerika'da yaşanan ekonomik bunalımın toplumsal yaşam ve bireyler üzerindeki etkileri irdelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmamıza konu olan ?yoksulluk? teması, Steinbeck'in yapıtlarında, kahramanların sürekli mücadele etmek zorunda kaldıkları zor yaşam koşullarına olan etkisiyle ele alınır.Sonuç olarak, her insanın insani yaşam şartlarını hak ettiği, bu yaşam standardının maddiyata bağlı olduğu, ancak maddiyata gereğinden fazla değer verilip anlamlar yüklenmesinin, birçok problemi beraberinde getirdiği, bu sorunlara meydan vermemenin ya da bu sorunları çözmenin tek yolunun yaşam şartlarını düzeltmek, adil bir gelir dağılımı sağlamak olduğu görülmüştür.

John Steinbeck is one of the major social novelists focusing on the troubles of society and writing about them. In his works, he reflects the social problems which depend on economic troubles of the time and he attracts attention with his sensitivitiy to these subjects.With the Stock Market Crash in 1930s, United States of America sees the most effective collapse in its history and this economical collapse also causes many social problems. Th economic problems divide the community into classes, and these problems affect especially the middle class and workers. The workers search for new solutions and this search makes communism more popular. The toubles are also effectively reflected in literature, and there are social and critical achievements that reflect the social structure and economic problems of the time. John Steinbeck is just like a mirror of the American society of the time.In this study, the causes and results of the Great Depression, social life of the time, the reflection of this time into literature, the life of Steinbeck, his literary carrier and general features of his novels; the effects of economic depression on the social life and individuals in the works of The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, The Pearl, Tortilla Flatt and Cannery Row are the topics to be studied. Poverty is the focus of this study and its effects on the hard conditions of the lives in Steinbeck?s novels and on his characters are studied at a large extent.As a result; it has been found that people deserve humanely conditions of life, and that this life standard depends on material, but appreciating life standards too much and loading it with extreme value and meaning may cause many problems. The only way to prevent corruption or to solve these problems is to reform the life conditions and to provide an equal income distribution.
