Characteristics of Milk Yield and Blood Serum Levels of Ca, K, P and Co of Awassi Sheep Maintained at Village Conditions in Gaziantep City
Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to be determined the some milk traits and the levels ofCa, K, P, and Co of blood serum in Awassi sheep maintained at village conditions.Totally, 63 Awassi ewes with ages of 2-3 years were used as animal material.Milking in Awassi ewes started at thirty days after parturition. Controls of themilking were made at 14 days intervals. Lactation period and lactation milk productionfor each ewe were determined from data of controls based on test-day records andSweden method. The means of lactation period and lactation milk yield for Awassi ewes were165.46 days and 110.05 l, respectively. In the beginning (April), the middle (May), and the end (June) of lactationperiod, it were determined that means of Ca, K, P and Co in blood serum were 1.2806mg/l, 3.3888 mg/l, 5.0706 mg/dl and 0.037608 mg/l for April; 1.1805 mg/l, 3.4088mg/l, 5.1286 mg/dl and 0.017638 mg/l for May; 1.7801 mg/l, 3.6048 mg/l, 4.8919mg/dl and 0.022256 mg/l for June, respectively. The levels in middle of lactation period of Awassi ewes were defined asfollowing: milk fat, dry matter, density, point of freezing, and protein were 9.40%,11.61%, 1.0364 g/cm3, -0.59 °C and 6.09%, respectively. As a result, the findings suggest that the lactation period and the the lactation milkyield of Awassi sheep were sufficient level for rural conditions.
