The Adaptation of Silver Birch Tree (Betula Pendula Roth.) To Van Lake Ecological Conditions
Abstract
Silver Brich (Betula pendula Roth.) is grown naturally in Europe, Caucasus, Iran, Western Sibiria and in East Anatolian region of our country. Having a lenght of 30 meters and being categorised in the group of great trees, White Brich is utulized as a foliage plant or ornamental paysage in fine art landscaping. In this investigation, Silver Brich sapling were planted under Van lake ecologic conditions in various areas of Yuzuncu Yıl University campus for two years of period ( 2009 - 2010) and then their adaptation capabilities, twing growth and their phenologic properties were followed. Different investigations were conducted about the saplings planted in the course of our investigation in terms of their survival rate, phenologic and morphologic properties (twing lenght, sapling lengh, tip diameter, stem diameter). In our evalutions we came to the conclusion that % 66 of the planted White Brich saplings survived, and taht vegetative growth of these trees in the first year of planting (2009) was poor but the second year yielded to good developmental out come.In conclusion, based on the collected data, White Brich tree was found to be an appropriate pioneer plant in the investigations of paysage planning within university campus and under Van lake ecological conditions provided that additional precautions are taken for the enhancement of their survival rate.Key words: Betula, Twig development, Morphology, Phenology, Paysage
