The Relationship of Facies Features of Heybeli (adilcevaz-Bitlis) Travertines With Material Properties
Abstract
Within the scope of this thesis, it is aimed to determine the relationship between the Heybeli travertine facies properties, which crop out in the north of Van Lake, with the material properties and to investigate their industrial importance. In the studies carried out in the study area, 56 m core drilling was carried out. In this sounding study, a total of 54 m travertine succession was investigated. Experiments to determine the physical and mechanical properties of 88 core samples obtained as a result of this drilling work, as well as ultrasonic velocity measurements were made. As a result of field observations and mineralogical studies, Heybeli travertines; It has been distinguished into 5 different facies: 1-Crystalline crustal facies (divided into two sub-facies as yellow and gray), 2-Brechic-lithoclastic facies, 3-Sal type facies, 4-Bush type facies and 5-Gas porous travertine facies. The discontinuity properties of the cores obtained as a result of the core drilling work, physical properties such as porosity, density, water absorption, and mechanical properties with compression, tension and point load were determined in laboratory studies. In addition, ultrasonic velocity measurements were made on the samples and physical and mechanical determinations were made. According to the results obtained from the experiments, it was determined that the lithological properties of the facies contain parameters determining/limiting the physico-mechanical properties of the travertines and the facies properties directly affect the material properties. As a result of all field, core drilling, laboratory and petrographic analyzes, it has been determined that Heybeli travertines do not have any industrial importance.
