Investigation of Physical Education Teachers' Stress Perceptions and Communication Skills (example of Hakkari Province)
Abstract
Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the stress perceptions and communication skills of physical education teachers working in secondary and high schools of Hakkari Provincial Directorate of National Education. A total of 119 physical education teachers, 27 female and 92 male, working in secondary and high schools in Hakkari province in the 2021-2022 academic year, participated voluntarily in this research, which was carried out with the scanning model. The Communication Skills Assessment Scale (CIS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used as data collection tools. It was concluded that the gender, smoking, years in the profession, parental death status and active sports branch of the physical education teachers who participated in this study did not affect the stress sum value and the value of communication skills. It has been determined that physical education teachers who regularly do sports have better communication skills than those who do not, and their total stress levels in the scale are lower. In addition, it was concluded that teachers with more course hours had better communication skills. Another significant finding is that teachers with chronic illnesses are more stressed in terms of perception of stress discomfort. The current research, as a consequence, has shown that physical education teachers who regularly do sports and attend more classes have better communication with students and social environment, cope with stress better, and also have more self-efficacy. Therefore, better communication of the teacher who can cope with stress will also be instrumental in better communication with the students and raising more successful students. Another finding obtained from the study was that teachers with chronic illnesses were affected by stress. The psychological support of these teachers from the school counsellors may be an option that can improve their perceptions of stress. Again, encouraging the teachers who do not do sports regularly to do sports and improving the lesson hours can be other approaches that can be beneficial, since these can reduce the perception of stress in teachers and increase their communication skills.
