The Effect of Teaching Photosynthesis Using Comic Strip Materials on the Academic Achievement of 12th Grade High School Biology Students

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı lise 12. sınıf biyoloji dersinde işlenen Fotosentez konusunun karikatür materyalleri ile öğretiminin öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına olan etkisini ölçmektir. Fotosentez, biyoloji derslerinin önemli bir konusu olup, bitkilerin hayatta kalması ve ekosistemlerin dengesinin korunmasında önemli bir süreçtir. Bu nedenle, bu konunun etkili bir şekilde öğretilmesi ve anlaşılması büyük önem taşımaktadır. Araştırmada yarı deneysel yöntem kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2023-2024 eğitim ve öğretim yılı bahar döneminde Cumhuriyet Eğitim Merkezi'nde eğitim hizmeti alan 12. sınıfında öğrenim gören 26 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak; Biyoloji Bilgi Testi 1 (BBT 1), Biyoloji Bilgi Testi 2 (BBT 2) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada deney ve kontrol grubunun ön test-son test puanlarının karşılaştırılmasında veri normal dağılım gösterdiği için Bağımsız Örneklemler t testi kullanılmıştır. Her bir grubun (kontrol ve deney) ön test ve son testlerden aldıkları puanların karşılaştırılması amacıyla Bağımlı Örneklemler için t testi kullanılmıştır. Deney grubundaki 13 öğrenci, kontrol grubundaki 13 öğrenciye göre daha yüksek notlar elde etmiş ve biyoloji dersine daha fazla ilgi göstermişlerdir. Araştırma sonuçları, karikatür materyalleri ile desteklenmiş fotosentez konusunun öğretilmesinin öğrencilerin akademik başarılarını olumlu yönde etkilediğini ve akademik başarılarını artırdığını göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak, bu araştırma, biyoloji derslerinde karikatür materyalleri ile öğrenmenin akademik başarılarına olumlu bir etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu bulgular, eğitimde karikatür materyallerin etkili bir şekilde kullanılmasının önemini vurgulamakta ve öğretim stratejilerinin geliştirilmesine katkıda bulunmaktadır.The purpose of this study is to measure the effect of teaching the topic of Photosynthesis in 12th grade biology class using cartoon materials on students' academic achievements. Photosynthesis is an important topic in biology classes, as it is a fundamental process for the survival of plants and important process in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. Therefore, effectively teaching and understanding this topic is of great importance. A semi-experimental method was used in the research. The study group consists of 26 students enrolled in the 12th grade at Cumhuriyet Education Center during the spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. As data collection tools, Biology Knowledge Test 1 (BBT 1) and Biology Knowledge Test 2 (BBT 2) were used. Independent Samples t-test was used to compare the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups as the data showed normal distribution. Dependent Samples t-test was used to compare the scores obtained by each group (control and experimental) from pre-tests and post-tests. The 13 students in the experimental group achieved higher grades and showed more interest in biology class compared to the 13 students in the control group. The research results indicate that teaching the topic of photosynthesis with cartoon materials positively affects students' academic achievements and increases their academic success. In conclusion, this research demonstrates the positive impact of learning with cartoon materials on academic achievements in biology classes. These findings highlight the importance of effectively utilizing cartoon materials in education and contribute to the development of teaching strategies.
