The Impact of Religious Beliefs and Attitudes in Coping With the Novel Coronavirus Disease (covid-19): a Sociological Study on Academics

Abstract

Günümüz modern dünyasında afet türleri, kaynakları bakımından çeşitlilik göstermek ile birlikte sonuçları bakımından küresel boyutlara ulaşmıştır. Bunun en güncel örneği günümüzde etkileri devam eden biyolojik bir afet türü olan Covid-19 salgınıdır. Diğer afetlerde olduğu gibi bu süreçte de dinin etkin olduğu bilinmektedir. Bu anlamda Covid-19 ile başa çıkmada dini inanç ve tutumların etkisini incelemek bu çalışmanın temel amacıdır. Bu çalışma birden çok disiplinin görünümlerini yansıtmaktadır. Nitekim sosyoloji perspektifinden ele alınan bu çalışmada, sosyolojinin önemli alt disiplinlerinden olan din sosyolojisi ve afet sosyolojisinden yararlanılmıştır. Nitel araştırma yöntemine başvurulan bu çalışmada, amaçlı örnekleme tekniği kullanılmıştır. Böylece saha araştırması, çalışma grubu Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi akademisyenleri olan Covid-19 salgın hastalığını yaşamış 13 kadın ve 13 erkek olmak üzere toplam 26 katılımcı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Derinlemesine görüşmelerin yapıldığı bu çalışmada içerik analizi yapılarak temalara ulaşılmıştır. Bulgular başlığı altında ele alınan bu temalar, katılımcıların afet dönemlerinde dinin yeri ve önemine dair görüşlerine, hastalık dönemlerinde verdikleri dini tepkilere ve salgın kısıtlamaları nedeniyle dini yaşantıdaki değişimlere odaklanılmıştır. Bundan hareketle çalışmada genelde afet dönemlerinde dinin önemi, özelde de Covid-19 salgın hastalığı döneminde dini inancın yeri, verilen dini tepkiler, dinin tedavi sürecine etkisi, hastalık öncesi ve sonrasında dini yaşantıdaki değişimler üzerinde durulmuştur. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre dini inancın, Covid-19 hastalığı döneminde özellikle sağladığı psikolojik destek ile tedavi sürecine katkıda bulunduğu anlaşılmıştır.

In today's modern world, types of disasters vary in terms of their sources, yet their consequences reach global proportions. As the most current example in this regard, we can refer to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which continues to persist as a biological disaster with enduring effects. It is known that religion is influential in this process as in other disaster periods. In this sense, the main objective of this study is to examine the effect of religious beliefs and attitudes in coping with the Covid-19 pandemic. This study reflects the views of multiple disciplines. As a matter of fact, in the study approached from a sociological perspective, the significant sub-disciplines of sociology, namely the sociology of religion and disaster sociology, are utilized. In the study, in which a qualitative research method is employed, a purposeful sampling technique is used. Thus, the field study is conducted with a total of 26 participants, consisting of 13 women and 13 men who are academicians from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University and experience the Covid-19 pandemic disease. In this study where in-depth interviews are carried out, themes are reached through content analysis. The themes addressed under the findings section encompass the participants' views on the place and importance of religion in disaster periods, their religious reactions during periods of illness, and changes in religious life due to epidemic restrictions. From this point of view, the study focuses on the importance of religion in disaster periods from a general perspective, while from a particular perspective, the place of religious belief during the Covid-19 epidemic, the religious reactions given, the effect of religion on the treatment process, and the changes in religious life before and after the disease are emphasized. As a result, it is understood that religious beliefs contribute to psychological support during the Covid-19 pandemic, aiding in the treatment process.
