Abstract
Aldemir R, Effects of substituting barley with wet sugar beet pulp silage on amount of total crude protein entering into duodenum in lambs, Yuzuncu Yıl Universty, Institue of Health Sciences Ph. D Thesis in Department of Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases, Van, 2010. The objectives of this study was to evaluate the effects of substituting barley with wet sugar beet pulp silage prepared with mixing 8% wheat bran at differing levels on feed intake, digestibility, total crude protein (CP) entering into duodenum and some protein fractions and some rumen fermentation parameters. To achieve this objective, four isocaloric and iso- nitrogenous diets were prepared by substituting barley energy with wet sugar beet pulp silage (WSBPS) at % 0 (control), %30 (30% WSBPS), %70 (70% WSBPS) and %100 (100% WSBPS). These diets were fed to 4 ruminally and duodenually cannulated Kıvırcık x Morkaraman crossbred lambs within 4x4 Latin Square design. Experiment was carried out as 4 periods consisting of 16 days after 20 days of adaptation period. Amounts of nutrient consumed, percentage of nutrient digestibility, amount of total CP entering into duodenum and its fractions were determined. Rumen fermentation parameter such as rumen pH and ammonia-N levels were determined Ruminal degradation characteristics of feed used in the experiment were also evaluated. Ruminal KM, OM, and HP degradations were 80.84, 82.20, 92.62%; 62.64, 60.66, 76.64%, 68.18, 66.72, 95.11% and 80.46, 89.85, 96.78% for WSBPS, sainfoin hay, sunflower meal, and barley, respectively (P<0.05). Daily dry matter intake, total DM, OM and CP digestibilities were highest in sheep fed 70% WSBPS and lowest in sheep fed 100% WSBPS (P>0.05). The highest and lowest amount of total DM, OM and CP digested were 1157.15-920.71; 1098.61-868.02 and 161.74-114.49 g/d, respectively (P>0.05). The highest NDF and ADF digestibilities were observed with 70% WSBPS, the lowest NDF and ADF digestibilities were observed with control group. Total crude protein (CP) entering into duodenum (130.09 g/d) and microbial HP(101.60 g/d) were the highest in sheep fed 70% WSBPS and total crude protein (CP) entering into duodenum (104.14 g/d) and microbial HP(81.91 g/d) were lowest in sheep fed 30% WSBPS. Efficiency of microbial protein synthesis were 10.13, 8.37, 9.54 and 12.06 gMP/100g OMTDR for control, 30% WSPS, 70% WSBPS and 100% WSPS, respectively (P>0.05). Ruminal NH3-N levels were low in control group but high in 30% WSBPS group (P>0.05). Even though ruminal pH level was lowest in control group (5.7), they were generally in normal physiological range for ruminant animals. In conclusion, it can be concluded that energy coming from barley can be substituted with wet sugar beet pulp silage prepared with mixing wheat bran up to 70% and can even be substituted with wet sugar beet pulp silage prepared with mixing wheat bran up to 100% if some production loss is neglected.
