The Dowry Tradition in the 19th Century Ottoman Political and Social Life

Abstract

Araştırmada, Türklere ait olan gelenek ve göreneklerin önemli bir unsuru olan 'çeyiz' geleneğinin Osmanlı Devleti'ne sosyal, siyasal ve ekonomik açıdan etkileri hakkında analizler yapılmış ve bununla ilgili detaylı bilgiler verilmiştir. Bu detaylı bilgiler verilmeden, tarih öncesi ve tarihi devirlerin ışığında çeyizin etkisinden bahsedilerek belirli çözümlemeler yapılmıştır. İlk Çağlardan itibaren, İslamiyet öncesi ve sonrası Türk Devletlerine olan etkilerinden ve bu devletlerin etrafında nasıl şekillendiğinden bahsedilmiştir. Çalışmanın devamında ise çeyiz geleneğinin Osmanlı Devleti üzerinde ki etkileri, zaman ve dönem koşullarına dikkat edilerek takip edilmiş, saray ve taşra halkını nasıl ve ne yönde etkilediğinden söz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın asıl konusunu oluşturan 19. Yüzyılda Osmanlı Devleti'nin, kötü gidişatının yanında bu âdetin bozulması, bozulan âdetin ve düzen ortamının tekrar sağlanması adına atılan adımları, alınan kararları ve yapılan düzenlemeleri incelenmiş ve aktarılmıştır. Altı asırlık dönemde ve hüküm sürülen yerlerde farklı bir şekle bürünen çeyizin İstanbul ve çevresindeki hususiyetlerine değinilmiş olan bu çalışma; siyasi evlilikler, saray düğünleri ve taşranın adetlerine ilişkin örnek olaylar ve veriler üzerinden anlamlandırılmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu anlamlandırmalar yapılırken Osmanlı saray çevrisinden yola çıkarak toplum ve aile yapısının özellikleri dikkate alınıp farklılık ve benzerlikleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu gayretin referans kaynaklarını ise başta Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi'nde bulunan belgeler olmak üzere dönem vakayinameleri, salnâmeler, süreli yayınlar ve konu hakkında yapılan akademik çalışmalar ile yardımcı kaynaklar teşkil etmiştir.

In the research, analyzes were made about the social, political and economic effects of the 'dowry' tradition, which is an important element of the traditions and customs belonging to the Turks, on the Ottoman Empire and detailed information was given about it. Without giving this detailed information, certain analyzes were made by mentionıng the effect of dowry in the light of prehistoric and historical periods. From the antiquity, its effects on the Turkish states before and after İslam and how they were shaped around these states were mentioned. In the continuation of the study, the effects of the dowry tradition on the Ottoman Empire were followed by paying attention to the time and period conditions, and how and in what way it affected the palace and rural people. In addition to the bad course of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, which constitutes the main subject of the study, the deterioration of this custom, the steps taken, the decisions taken and the regulations made in order to restore the deteriorated custom and order environment were examined and explained. In this study, the characteristics of the dowry, which took on a different shape in six centuries and in places where prevailed, are mentioned; Political, marriages, palace weddings and provincial customs were interpreted through case studies and data. While making these interpretations, the characteristics of the society and family structure are taken into consideration, and their differences and similarities are emphasized, based on the Ottoman palace environment. The reference sources for this effort were the documents in the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, period chronicles, yearbooks, periodicals and academic studies on the subject and auxiliary sources.
