Abstract
The present study was carried out on ciliates belonging to genus Frontonia from some aquatic habitats in Van, during the years of 2009-2012. Ciliates were examined by the using live and various silver staining techniques, and revealed their taxonomical characteristics. Three different Frontonia populations were determined, which are F. angusta angusta Kahl 1931, F. elliptica Beardsley 1902 and F. leucas Ehrenberg 1838. This populations are in agreement with literature in terms of general morphological characteristics. However, it was determined that several differentiations on some characterictics such as cell size, excratory pore numbers, vestibular kinety numbers, kinety rows of peniculi and numbers of micronuclei. These differentiations are based on various geographical regions.Although morphological characters are very important criteria of ciliate taxonomy, morphology are sometimes insufficient for separation of different populations. Therefore, it was resulted that molecular techniques must be done to decide whether differencies in populations determined in present study are in the level of species or not.Key words: Frontonia Peniculid ciliates, Aquatic environment, Van, Turkey.
