Evaluation of Small Ruminant Enterprises in Terms of Welfare in Edremit District of Van Province

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, koyun ve keçilerde refah değerlendirmesi amacıyla ANI (Animal Needs Index) 35 L sisteminden geliştirilen protokolü kullanarak küçükbaş hayvancılık işletmelerinin hayvan refah kriterlerine uygunluğunu araştırmaktır. Çalışma, Van ili Edremit ilçesinde faaliyet gösteren ve tarım bilgi sistemine kayıtlı 100 baş ve üzeri küçükbaş hayvan varlığına sahip 61 adet işletme üzerinde yürütülmüştür. İşletmeler ziyaret edilerek 7'si barınma, 7'si yapı ve ekipman durumu ve 3'ü hayvan sağlığı ile ilgili olmak üzere 17 farklı parametre dikkate alınmıştır. Sonuç olarak, küçükbaş hayvancılık işletmelerinin hayvan refah kriterlerine uygunluğunu ortaya koymak amacıyla koyun ve keçilerde refah değerlendirmesi amacıyla ANI 35 L sisteminden geliştirilen protokolün kullanılabileceği belirlenmiştir. Söz konusu protokole göre Van ili Edremit ilçesindeki küçükbaş hayvancılık işletmelerinin, barınma koşulları parametrelerinden birim hayvan başına düşen yüzey alanı ve yemlik boyutu dışındaki parametreler bakımından düşük-orta; yapı ve ekipman durumu parametreleri açısından düşük-orta ve hayvan sağlığı parametreleri bakımından da orta-yüksek puan refah kategorilerinde yer aldığı belirlenmiştir.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the small ruminant enterprises met animal welfare criteria by using the protocol derived from the ANI (Animal Needs Index)35 L system to evaluate the welfare of sheep and goats. The study was carried out on 61 enterprises with 100 heads and more small ruminants which were located in Edremit district of Van province and registered in the agricultural information system. Seventeen different parameters including 7 housing, 7 the structure and equipment condition and 3 animal health were taken into consideration by visiting the enterprises. As a result, it was determined that the protocol developed from ANI 35 L system can be used in order to determine the conformity of small ruminant enterprises with animal welfare criteria. According to this protocol, the small ruminant enterprises in Edremit district of Van province were in low-to-medium welfare categories in terms of parameters other than space allowance for each animal and feeder size from housing conditions parameters; in low-to-medium welfare categories in terms of the structure and equipment parameters, and in medium-to-high welfare categories in terms of animal health parameters.
