Determination of Harris Lines in Baby and Children's Bone Unearthed From Burial Mound of the Van Castle Dating Back To the 19th Century

Abstract

Harris çizgileri, fizyolojik strese ve çocukluk çağı hastalıklarına bağlı olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çizgiler daha çok bebek ve çocuklarda gözlemlenir. Bu çalışmada bebek ve çocuklarda strese bağlı oluşan Harris çizgileri incelenmiştir. Harris çizgilerinin tespit edilmesinde kullanılan klasik yöntem, iskeletlerin röntgenlerine bakılarak bu oluşunun varlığının veya yokluğunun tespit edilmesi şeklindedir. Bu tez çalışmasında bu yönteme ek olarak örneklerin bilgisayarlı tomografi (CT) çekimleri yapılmış klasik yönteme ek olarak CT'lerden elde edilen görüntüler de kullanılarak hangi görüntü kaynağının bu tür çalışmalarda daha kesin sonuçlar verebileceği araştırılmıştır. Tez kapsamında Van Kalesi Höyüğü Eski Van Şehri kazı alanından değişik kazı sezonlarında elde edilen toplam 106 bebek ve çocuk iskeleti incelenmiştir. Bu örneklem grubu içinden veri elde edilebilecek korunma durumu iyi olan 40 tibia bu çalışmanın materyali olarak incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmada röntgen ve Bilgisaraylı Tomografi verilerinden yararlanılmıştır. İncelenen 40 bireye ait tibia'dan 24'ünde Harris çizgileri tespit edilmiştir. Bu bireylerin çoğunluğunda Harris çizgilerine rastlanması o dönemin savaş koşullarının yarattığı kıtlığa ve strese dayanmaktadır. Harris lines occur due to physiological stress and childhood diseases. These lines are mostly observed in infants and children. The aim of this study is to examine Harris lines that are formed due to stress in infants and children. The classical method used to determine the Harris lines is conducted by looking at the X-rays of the skeletons to determine the presence or absence of the formation. In addition to this method, CT images of the samples were used to determine which image source could provide results that are more accurate. Within the scope of the study, a total of 106 infant and child skeletons obtained from different excavation seasons were investigated. The tibia bones of 40 individual with good protection status were evaluated as material of this study. (Age determination of 40 individuals with good and intact condition was obtained.). The research technique of this study is X-rays and CT images (were obtained from the tibia.) The obtained X-ray and CT images were analysed and the data were analyzed and interpreted statistically. Harris lines were determined in 24 of tibia belonging to 40 individuals examined. The presence of Harris in the majority of these individuals can be based on the socioeconomic conditions of (may have resulted from the famine and stress caused by the war conditions of) that period.
