The Effect of Keeping a Vocabulary Notebook in Turkish Lessons on Seventh Graders' Vocabulary

Abstract

Bu araştırmada 7. sınıf öğrencilerinin Türkçe dersinde kelime defteri tutmalarının kelime dağarcıklarına etkisi incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, Türkçe derslerinde kelime defteri tutmanın 7. sınıf öğrencilerinin kelime dağarcıklarını etkileyip etkilemediğini ortaya koymak, varsa bu etkinin ne yönde olduğunu belirlemektir. Nicel bir araştırma olan bu çalışmada gerçek deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışma ön test/son test kontrol gruplu modele göre yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Van ili, Muradiye ilçesindeki bir ortaokulda öğrenim gören 7. sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada 7. sınıf Türkçe ders kitabındaki kelimeler kullanılmıştır. Deney grubunda kelime defteri tekniği uygulanarak ders işlenirken kontrol grubunda süregelen eğitim anlayışıyla ders işlenmiştir. Çalışma, deney ve kontrol grubunda eş zamanlı olarak 11 hafta sürmüştür. Öğrencilerle bu sürede iki tema işlenmiştir. Öğrencilerden Kişisel Gelişim ve Sanat temalarını işlemeden önce ve işledikten sonra bu temalarla ilgili serbest türde yazı yazmaları istenmiştir. Elde edilen bu yazılar belirlenen kelimelerden kaçının kullanıldığına, kullanan öğrenci sayısına ve kullanma sıklığına göre incelenmiştir. Verilerin analizinde parametrik testlerden t-testi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca aritmetik ortalama (X), standart sapma (S) vb. değerlere de bakılmıştır. Yapılan analizin sonucuna göre kelime defteri tekniği uygulanarak ders işlenen deney grubu ile süregelen eğitim anlayışıyla ders işlenen kontrol grubu arasında anlamlı bir farklılık ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu sonuçlardan hareketle sonuç ve tartışma bölümünde bu çalışmayla benzer çalışmaların sonuçları karşılaştırılarak tartışılmıştır. Öneriler kısmında ise kelime öğretiminin öneminden dolayı kelime defteri tekniğinin derslerde uygulanması, ders kitabında konunun ele alınışı vb. durumlar için çeşitli önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

This paper addressed the effect of keeping a vocabulary notebook in Turkish lessons on seventh graders' vocabulary. This study investigated whether keeping a vocabulary notebook in Turkish lessons affected seventh graders' vocabulary. This quantitative study utilized a pretest/posttest control group experimental research design. The sample consisted of seventh graders from a middle school in the district of Muradiye of the city of Van, Türkiye. The study focused on words in the seventh-grade Turkish textbook. The experimental group participants kept vocabulary notebooks in Turkish lessons, while the control group participants received traditional instruction. The research lasted 11 weeks. The research concentrated on two themes: Personal Development and Art. Participants were asked to write about the themes before and after covering them. The analysis of these writings involved assessing the usage of identified words, taking into account factors such as the number of students employing them and the frequency of their use. The data were analyzed using means (X), standard deviations (SD), and t-tests. The results indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. In the conclusion and discussion section, the results were compared and discussed in line with the literature. In the suggestions section, various recommendations were made for the implementation of the word notebook technique in lessons, the handling of the subject in the textbook, etc.
