The Prison Teachers? Perceptions of Job Satisfaction in Turkey

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın temel amacı; Türkiye genelinde ceza infaz kurumlarında görev yapan cezaevi öğretmenlerinin iş doyum düzeyini tespit etmektir. Cezaevi öğretmenlerinin demografik özelliklerinin iş doyumlarını etkileyip etkilemediği de incelenmiştir.Araştırma 2009 yılında Türkiye genelinde ceza infaz kurumlarında görev yapan toplam 204 cezaevi öğretmenini kapsamaktadır. Araştırma verilerini toplamak için Minnesota İş Doyumu Ölçeği ile kişisel bilgi formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerin çözümlenmesinde tek yönlü varyans analizi, LSD testi ve t-testi teknikleri uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca araştırmanın amacına uygun olarak hazırlanan görüşme formuyla cezaevi öğretmenlerinin iş doyum algılarına yönelik nitel veriler elde edilmiştir.Araştırma bulgularına göre, cezaevi öğretmenlerinin genel iş doyum düzeyleri `orta' düzeyde bulunmuştur. Cezaevi öğretmenlerinin demografik özellikleri ile genel iş doyum düzeyleri arasında herhangi anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamıştır. Cezaevi öğretmenlerinin `iç' ve `dış' doyum düzeyleri de `orta' düzeyde bulunmuştur. Demografik değişkenler açısından sadece 31-40 yaş grubundaki öğretmenlerin, kendilerinden daha genç ve daha yaşlı olan öğretmen grubuna göre dış doyumlarının daha düşük olduğu bulunmuştur.Araştırma sonuçlarına göre, cezaevi öğretmenlerinin çalışma şartlarının iyileştirilmesi (gerekli fiziki donanım, araç-gereç, iletişim ve teknolojik imkanların temin edilmesi), cezaevi idarecilerinin ve diğer personellerin hizmet içi eğitimler ile ceza infaz kurumlarında yürütülmekte olan eğitim faaliyetleri hakkında bilinçlendirilmeleri, cezaevi öğretmenlerinin daha çok yetkilendirilmeleri, cezaevi öğretmenlerine mesleklerinde ilerleyebilme imkanlarının (uzmanlık, yöneticilik v.b) sunulması ve başarılı öğretmenler için etkili bir ödül sisteminin getirilmesi önerilmiştir.The purpose of the research is to determine the level of the job satisfaction of the teachers who work in the prisons in Turkey. Furthermore, investigated that how the demographic characteristics may effect to job satisfaction of the teachers.The sample of the research consists of 204 teachers of prisons in Turkey. The data was collected by using Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale and personal information sheet. One-Way Anova, LSD and t-test methods were performed on the data as statistical procedures. Furthermore, qualitative data on prison teachers? perceptions of job satisfaction were obtained via interwiev form that prepared in accordence with purpose of research.According to the findings of the research that the levels of overall job satisfaction of the teachers in the prisons have been found on ?middle level?. In terms of overall job satisfaction, there were no significant differences between the level of job satisfaction and the teachers demografic characteristics. Furthermore, internal and external job satisfaction of the teachers of prisons have been found on `middle level?. In terms of demografic characteristics, there has been found that only 31-40 ages group of teachers have lower external job satisfaction than the other age gruops of teachers.According to the findings of the research, the researcher suggested that improving of work conditions (provide that necessary physical hardware, possibilities for the technologic and communication, required equipment etc.), educating prison administrators and other personel with in-service training about education and training activities in prisons, authorizing prison teachers, providing of the advance possibilities for the teachers in their jobs (administration, expertness etc), and improving of an effective reward system for successful teachers.
