The Effects of Migration on Nation-States in the Age of Globalization
Abstract
Migration and globalization are two closely interconnected concepts in today's world. Globalization, through technological advancements, trade liberalization, and developments in communication, has significantly increased global interaction. This interaction has brought about numerous transnational processes, one of which is migration. Migration refers to the movement of people across national borders to live and work in different countries. This phenomenon has led to the questioning of concepts traditionally defined by the nation-state structure, such as citizenship, sovereignty, and national borders. The nation-state is a fundamental concept in modern international relations. Each nation-state exercises sovereignty over a specific territory and recognizes the people residing within its borders as its citizens. The nation-state structure forms the foundation for the governance and policymaking of states. In the contemporary world, migration and globalization significantly impact the structures of nation-states. The aim of this thesis is to understand the effects of migration, which has emerged as a result of globalization, on nation-state structures and to evaluate the significance of these impacts. The study will explore the effects of migration on the nation-state structure and analyze how these effects are shaped in the context of globalization. This thesis focuses on the influence of migration on various aspects of nation-states, including borders, social structures, economy, culture, and politics. The main argument of this thesis is that increasing migration movements in the age of globalization compel nation-states to undergo profound transformations across multiple dimensions. The traditional notions of sovereignty, border security, citizenship, and national identity, which are foundational elements of nation-states, are being reshaped by global migration waves. This process significantly impacts the existence and functioning of nation-states. Furthermore, it is argued that this transformation necessitates international cooperation and creates lasting effects on the global order.
