Dissolution Kinetics of Borax in Sulphuric Acid Solutions
Abstract
Borax is one of the most important of Turkey, which has about 72 % of world boron reserves. Boron is no present in elemental form in nature. Its minerals is in the form of metal borates, especially calcium and sodium borates. Borax has the chemical formula Na2O.2B2O3.10H2O Borax is obtained from boron mines located in Eskişehir-Kırka in Turkey. In this study, dissolution kinetics of borax in sulphuric acid solutions was studied. The effects of particle size, temperature, acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio and stirring speed on the dissolution rate were investigated. In result, it was determined that dissolution rate increased with decreasing particle size and solid-to-liquid ratio and increasing reaction temperature. For acid concentrations up to 0.75 molL-1 , dissolution rate increased with increasing acid concentration. For higher than 0.75molL-1 acid concentrations, the dissolution rate was decreased as acid concentration increased. Stirring speed was less effect on the dissolution rate. The dissolution kinetics of borax was examined according to homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction models, and it was found that the dissolution rate was controlled by ash layer diffusion process and reaction rate can be given as below[1-3(1-XB)2/3 +2(1-XB)]=kt Where; t time, XB conversion fraction and k is the rate constant.Key words: Boron, Borax, Dissolution kinetics, Sulphuric acid.
