Formation and Classification of Soils at the Different Physiographic Units Affected by Lake Van
Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine soil formations at the different physiographic units affected by Lake Van and to classify soils according to soil taxonomy. Seven soil profiles in the research area were defined and some soil physical and chemical properties were determined. Soils do not show a good profile development due to their too young formation, and they have moderate and shallow profile depths. Drainage problems were observed locally, and also increments in lime and natrium contents at the subhorizons were determined. Soils at the different physiographic units formed by the effect of Lake Van were included to Entisol and Inceptisol orders. Profiles were classified in the subgroups as follows; profile 1- Oxyaquic Xerorthent, profile 2- Typic Haploxerepts, profile 3- Calcic Haploxerepts, profile 6- Typic Xeropsamments, and profiles 4, 5 and 7- Typic Xerothents. Key words: Lake Van, soil formation, soil classification
