dc.description.abstract Although, there were various studies investigating importance of oxidant and antioxidant systems in pleural diseases, the role of free radicals in these diseases have not yet been clarified. In this study, it was aimed to investigate diagnostic importance of malondialdehyd (MDA) an end product of lipid peroxidation and ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA) and total bilurubin (TB) as an endogenous antioxidants in children with empyema. For this reason, serum MDA, AA, UA and TB levels were obtained in 17 patients with empyema and 22 healthy children as control group. While the serum MDA levels were higher in patient group as compared to control group (p<0.05), AA, UA and TB levels were not significantly different between patient and control group (p>0.05). There results suggest that while an increased MDA levels could be developed as a result of increased oxidative damage, AA, UA and TB levels as an antioxidant could not have diagnostic value in patients with empyema. en_US
