The Effect of Mathematical Modeling Activites for 5th Grade Students in Countryside on Problem Solving, Motivation and Attitudes of Students
Abstract
This study aims to investigate whether mathematical modeling activities affect the problem-solving skills, mathematical motivation, and attitudes of 5th-grade students in rural areas. In the research, a semi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. A convenient/easy sampling method will be used on 5th-grade students studying in a public school in the Muradiye district of Van in this research. The data of the study were obtained by applying the Problem Solving Skills Scale, Mathematics Problem Solving Attitude Scale and Mathematics Motivation Scale which was prepared based on the motivation part of the Motivational Strategies in Learning Scale. In addition, students' opinions regarding the experience of mathematical modeling activities were taken. The analysis of quantitative data was analyzed with the SPSS program. Mathematical modeling applications in fifth grade students studying in rural areas; it was determined that there were no significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores of the students in terms of problem solving skills, mathematical motivation and attitudes towards mathematics. However, it was determined that there were some increases in sub-dimensions. It is seen that there is an increase in understanding, application and evaluation from the sub-dimensions of problem solving skills. It is seen that there is an increase in the levels of intrinsic goal-oriented, extrinsic goal-oriented, learning belief, and self-efficacy, which are sub-dimensions of motivation for the mathematics lesson. It is seen that there is an increase in the sub-dimension of enjoyment of the attitude towards the mathematics lesson. It is recommended that longer-term studies be conducted by restructuring mathematical modeling activities to support students studying in rural areas.
