Abstract

In recent years, as a result of the increase in drought, one of the most important abiotic stress conditions, large declines have been observed in the yield and quality of agricultural products. The solution will be much easier if the drought damage in crops has to be defined well. Scientific studies have been carried out in order to minimize the decrease in yield and quality. The present study aimed to determine the enzyme and ion changes in common bean, an important product consumed and enjoyed a lot in the world and our country, during drought stress. Drought stress has been created by cutting irrigation water gradually for common bean plants grown in pots containing 2:1 peat + perlite mixture. The enzyme and ion level changes in the drought tolerant (Yakutiye and V-a1) and in drought sensitive (Zulbiye and T7) bean genotypes have been analyzed in five different periods of drought stress. The changes in the level of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), malondialdehyde (MDA), chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, the total chlorophyll, K, Ca and Na were examined on the 0th, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th days of the drought stress. Obvious differences have been observed for these examined parameters in drought tolerant and susceptible genotypes. © 2016, Centenary University. All rights reserved.
