Abstract
Lake Van Basin located in the northern part of the collision zone between the Arabian and Eurasian plates was formed by N-S compressional regime in Pliocene. The basin contains the largest soda lake of the world namely Lake Van. Engil River is one of the largest drainage systems discharging to the Lake Van. Determination of the sedimentological, geomorphological, and structural properties of the Quaternary travertines with fluvial and lacustrine deposits in this river's valley is the is the subject of the thesis. Engil Valley located on the basement rocks composed of metamorphic, ophiolitic and turbiditic rocks has been deformed by E-W trending Gürpınar Fault. The location and seismicity of the Gürpınar Fault, which has a character of northerly dipping reverse fault, has been revealed with structural and geomorphological data within the scope of this thesis study. According to field study, The Gürpınar Fault has a major role for the geological evolution of the Engil Valley and the rocks observed inside of it. Keywords: Eastern Anatolia, Geomorphology, Gürpınar Fault, Sedimentology, Structural geology, Van
