A Comparative Analysis of Values Addressed by Texts in Secondary School Turkish Textbooks and Values Addressed by Texts Written by Secondary School Students

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, ortaokul Türkçe ders kitaplarında yer alan metinlerdeki değerlerle ortaokul öğrencilerinin yazılarındaki değerler karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki metinlerde geçen değerleri tespit etmek ve bu metinleri işleyen öğrencilerin kitaplardaki metinlerde geçen değerleri kendi yazılarında ne düzeyde kullandıklarını belirlemektir. Bu amaç çerçevesinde İlk olarak söz konusu metinlerde bulunan değerler tespit edilmiş, daha sonra her tema sonunda öğrencilerin yazdıkları yazılarda bulunan değerler belirlenmiştir. Son olarak da kitaplardaki metinlerde geçen değerlerle öğrenci yazılarında geçen değerler karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu çalışmada 'temel nitel araştırma' deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada veriler nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesi yoluyla toplanmıştır. Çalışmanın materyalini, ortaokul Türkçe ders kitaplarının ilk dört temasında bulunan 80 metin (48 okuma, 16 dinleme ve 16 serbest okuma metni) ve Van ili merkez ilçesinde bulunan bir ortaokulda öğrenim gören öğrencilerin her tema sonunda yazdıkları yazılar (her sınıf düzeyinde 20 metin olmak üzere bir sınıf düzeyinde 80, toplamda ise 320) oluşturmaktadır. Elde edilen veriler, betimsel analizle çözümlenmiş, sıklık açısından değerlendirilmiş ve yorumlanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda tespit edilen 54 farklı değerden sevgi, vatanseverlik, estetik, saygı, fedakârlık, yardımseverlik, dostluk ve bilinçlendirme değerleri kitaplardaki metinlerde ve öğrenci yazılarında en çok geçen değerler olurken; adalet, barış, eşitlik, dil bilinci, misafirperverlik, ümit var olma değerleri hem kitaplardaki metinlerde hem de öğrenci yazılarında en az geçen değerler arasında yer almıştır. Azim, dayanışma, cesaret, takdir etme, bilme-öğrenme isteği değerleri kitaplarda en fazla geçen değerler olmasına rağmen öğrenci yazılarında az geçen değerler arasında yer alırken; kahramanlık, dürüstlük, başarı, iyilik, temizlik, sorumluluk değerleri öğrenci yazılarında çokça geçmelerine rağmen kitaplarda en az geçen değerler olmuştur. Kitaplarda geçen değerler ile öğrenci yazılarında geçen değerlerin çoğunlukla örtüştüğü tespit edilmiştir. Bu sonuçlardan hareketle tartışma kısmında, araştırmanın bulguları benzer çalışmaların bulgularıyla karşılaştırılmış ve tartışılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda öğretim programı hazırlayıcıları ve uygulayıcılarıyla ders kitabı yazarları başta olmak üzere ilgili kişi ve kurumlara çeşitli önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

This paper focused on the values addressed by texts in secondary school Turkish textbooks and those addressed by texts written by secondary school students. The study had three stages. First, it identified the values in the secondary school Turkish textbooks. Second, it determined how often secondary school students referred to those values in the texts they wrote at the end of each theme. Third, it compared the values in the Turkish textbooks and students' texts. This study adopted a basic qualitative research design. Data were collected using qualitative document review. The data were derived from 80 texts (48 reading, 16 listening, and 16 free reading texts) in the first four themes of the Turkish textbooks and 320 texts (80 texts at a grade level and 20 texts at each grade level) written by students at the end of each theme. Students were recruited from a secondary school in the central district of Van/Turkey. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and were evaluated in terms of frequency and then interpreted. 54 values were identified. The Turkish textbooks and students' texts referred to the values of love, patriotism, aesthetics, respect, self-sacrifice, benevolence, friendship, and awareness the most frequently. On the other hand, they referred to the values of justice, peace, equality, linguistic awareness, hospitality, hope, and existence the least. The Turkish textbooks addressed the values of perseverance, solidarity, courage, appreciation, willingness to know and learn the most. However, students' texts rarely talked about those values. Although the Turkish textbooks rarely mentioned the values of heroism, honesty, achievement, kindness, cleanliness, and responsibility, students' texts made a reference to those values many times. The results showed that the Turkish textbooks and students' texts addressed the same values most of the time. The results were compared with those of similar studies and then discussed in the discussion section. Based on the results, recommendations were made to relevant persons and institutions, including curriculum developers and instructors, and textbook authors.
