Investigation of the Effect of Realistic Mathematics Education Approach on Students' Success, Motivation and Attitudes in Teaching the Subject of 10th Grade Quadrilaterals and Polygons

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı Gerçekçi Matematik Eğitimi (GME) yaklaşımına dayalı olarak yapılan öğretim ile ortaöğretim 10. sınıf Dörtgenler ve Çokgenler Ünitesinin öğretiminin öğrenci başarısına, motivasyonuna ve tutumuna olan etkisini incelemektir. Çalışmanın örneklemi Van ilinde bir devlet Anadolu Lisesinde 10. Sınıfta öğrenim gören 62 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Çalışmada araştırma deseni olarak ön test- son test deney ve kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. İki grubun denkliğinin sağlanması amacıyla önceki dönem matematik dersi karne notları dikkate alınmıştır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak 10.sınıf Çokgenler ve Dörtgenler ünitesi ile ilgili 30 maddeden oluşan çoktan seçmeli başarı testi ile motivasyon ölçeği ve tutum ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde SPSS 22 istatistik programı kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler sonucunda deney grubu öğrencilerinin, kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre anlamlı biçimde ek başarı artışı gösterdikleri tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen verilerin analizi sonucunda GME'ye dayalı öğretimin akademik başarı, motivasyon ve öğrenci tutumları üzerinde olumlu etki yarattığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.The aim of this study is to examine the effect of teaching the 10th grade Quadrilaterals and Polygons Unit in secondary school, based on the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach, on student success, motivation and attitude. The sample of the study consists of 62 students studying in the 10th grade at a public Anatolian High School in Van. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test- post-test experimental and control groups was used as the research design in the study. In order to ensure the equivalence of the two groups, previous semester mathematics course report grades were taken into account. In the study, a multiple-choice achievement test consisting of 30 items related to the 10th grade Polygons and Quadrilaterals unit, motivation scale and attitude scale were used as data collection tools. SPSS 22 statistical program was used to analyze the data. As a result of the data obtained, it was determined that the experimental group students showed a significant increase in success compared to the control group students. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained, it was concluded that RME-based teaching had a positive effect on academic success, motivation and student attitudes.
