The Effect of Use of Songs With Teaching Material in Science Course on Students' Success, Attitude and Retention

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, 6. sınıf Fen Bilimleri dersi 'Vücudumuzdaki Sistemler' ünitesi öğretiminde, materyal olan şarkıların kullanılmasının öğrencilerin ders başarısına, bilgilerin kalıcılığına ve derse olan tutumlarına etkisini incelemektir. Araştırmada yöntem olarak ön-test son-test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel model kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini, Gaziantep ilinde yer alan MEB'e bağlı Karacaoğlan ortaokulunda 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılında öğrenim gören 6. sınıf öğrencilerinden, deney (N=35) ve kontrol grubu (N=33) olarak belirlenmiş 68 kişi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak; araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen Vücudumuzdaki Sistemler Başarı Testi (VSBT) ve Geban vd., (1994) tarafından geliştirilen Fen Bilgisi Tutum Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca başarı testi 4 hafta sonra kalıcılık düzeyini belirlemek için Kalıcılık Testi olarak tekrar uygulanmıştır. Araştırma sürecinde 'Vücudumuzdaki Sistemler' ünitesine ait konular deney grubunda Fen Bilimleri öğretim programında yer alan öğretime ek materyal olarak şarkıların kullanımıyla işlenirken, kontrol grubuna ise şarkı kullanılmadan geçerli müfredata uygun etkinlikler ile öğretim yapılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizi SPSS 25 programında yapılmıştır. Başarı ve tutum ölçek puanlarının karşılaştırılmasında deney ve kontrol grupları için bağımsız örneklem t-testi ve deney ve kontrol grubunun kendi içindeki puanlarının karşılaştırılması için eşleştirilmiş t-testi yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda; 'Vücudumuzdaki Sistemler' ünitesine ait konuların öğretiminde materyal olarak kullanılan şarkıların öğrencilerin akademik başarısını arttırdığı ve konuya ait bilgilerin kalıcılığının istenilen düzeyde olmadığı görülmüştür. Ayrıca Fen Bilimleri dersine yönelik tutumlarının her iki grup için olumlu yönde artış olduğu görülmüştür.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of using songs which are materials in the teaching of the systems in the body of 6th grade science course on the students' course success, the retention of the knowledge and their attitudes to the course. Quasi experimental model was used as a method in the research. The sample of the study consisted of 68 students from 6th grade students who study in Karacaoğlan Secondary School of Ministry of Education in Gaziantep in 2018-2019 academic year. Of these, 35 were experimental group and 33 were control group. As a data collection tool; The Systems in The Our Body Achievement Test developed by the researcher and the Science Attitude Scale developed by Geban et al. (1994) were used. In the research process, the songs in the experimental group were used in addition to the subjects in the curriculum of the Science Education and the songs compatible with the music supported teaching method. In the control group, the courses were conducted in accordance with the existing curriculum. SPSS 25 package program was used in the analysis of data and t test results were evaluated. As a result of the research; it was observed that the use of songs increased the students' course success and there was a significant difference in the retention of the knowledge about the subject. Furthermore, it was observed that the attitudes towards Science course increased positively for both groups.
