The relation between Se deficiency and various problems such as cardiovascular pathologies, digestive disorders, rheumatism and cancer has been shown by researches. The effects of Se on cells are concentration-dependent. If taken excessive amounts it has toxic effects. Selenium which is part of selenoproteins is an important antioxidant right along with having enzymatic and structural roles. Selenium is found in active side of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) which is one of the detoxification enzymes.
