Abstract

Background: Evaluate the effects of two simplified wheel polishing systems on three highly filled flowable composite resin on surface roughness, gloss and color stability. Methods: Four different resin composites were used in the study: Clearfil Majesty Flow (CMF), Omnichroma Flow (OMN), G-aenial Universal Injectable (GUI), and a nanohybrid material NeoSpectra (NS). From each material 8 mm to 2 mm 24 disc samples were prepared (total of 96). One side of the samples were polished with Twist Dia (TWD) or Nova Twist (NOV) to obtain two sub-groups. Surface roughness was measured with a Profilometer, gloss with a Glossmeter and specimens were immersed in coffee for 7-days. Color measurements were performed with a spectrophotometer after each step. Scanning electron microscope images of the surfaces were taken at all stages using two samples from each group. Surface roughness and gloss values were analysed by ANOVA, Tukey and Pearson Correlation tests. Color changes were evaluated with Paired-T-test, Independent T-test, ANOVA and Dunnett-t tests (p<0.05). Results: OMN showed the smoothest surfaces (p<0.05). Gloss was statistically different for TWD groups. All groups were less glossy than the Mylar strip groups (p<0.05). In TWD groups, NS was the group that exhibiting the most color change while CMF was the least (p=0.009). In NOV groups, OMN and NS were the groups having the most color change while GUF and CMF showed the less. After re-polishing, the color of all materials in TWD groups changed to ΔE<2; while in NOV groups, only NS group reached ΔE<2. The difference was significant for OMN and NS (p=0.011). Conclusion: Polishing with wheel systems in highly filled flowable composite resins produced smooth surfaces, but gloss values were low. After repolishing, all TWD groups reached ΔE<2, while only the NS group reached this value in NOV groups. © 2024, Selcuk University. All rights reserved.
