Putting the Travel-Observation Method Into Practice in Social Studies: an Action Research

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı gezi-gözlem yöntemini sosyal bilgilerde uygulamaya koymaktır. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden eylem araştırması deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırma 2022-2023 eğitim öğretim yılı güz döneminde Şırnak ili İdil ilçesine bağlı bir devlet okulunda 5. sınıfta öğrenime devam eden 13 kız ve 5 erkek olmak üzere toplamda 18 öğrenciyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın verileri; ön ve son algı anketi, araştırmacı ve öğrenci günlükleri, sınıf dışı etkinlikler, sınıf içi etkinlikler, öğrenci ödevlerindeki bilgilerden hareketle toplanılmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Çalışma boyunca araştırmacı ve öğrenciler tarafından günlükler tutulmuş ve bu günlükler sayesinde ortaya çıkan duygu ve düşünceler değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan değerlendirmeler doğrultusunda öğrencilerin derse karşı motivasyonlarının arttığı, derse ilgilerinin ve katılımlarının arttığı, öğrencilerde bilgi ve beceri düzeylerinde olumlu bir şekilde değişim yaşandığı tespit edilmiştir.

The purpose of this study is to implement the travel-observation method in social studies. In this study, the action research design, one of the qualitative research methods, was utilized. The study was carried out in the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year with a total of 18 students, 13 females and 5 males, who were 5th grade students at a public school in the İdil district of Şırnak province. The data of the study was collected based on the pre- and post-perception survey, researcher and student diaries, extracurricular activities, curricular activities, and knowledge and information available in students' homework. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method. Throughout the study, the diaries were kept by the researcher and students, and the feelings and opinions emerging from these diaries were evaluated. As far as these evaluations are concerned, it was revealed that students' motivation towards the course augmented, their interest and participation in the course increased, and there was a positive change in the students' knowledge and skill levels.
