A Study on the Future of National Identity in the Age of Globalization

Abstract

Bu çalışma küreselleşme sürecinde ulusal kimliğin geleceğini analiz etmeye yönelik bir çalışmadır. Çalışma iki ana tema üzerine kuruludur: Küreselleşme ve Ulusal Kimlik. Çalışmanın ilk temeli küreselleşmenin ne olduğu, küreselleşmeden ne anlaşılması gerektiği, küreselleşmenin ekonomik ve siyasi yönü iken; ikinci temeli ise ulusal kimliğin tarihsel gelişimi ve sosyal bilimler teorisindeki yeridir. Bu temeller üzerine kurulu olan çalışmanın son bölümünde ise temel tez konusu olan küreselleşme sürecinde ulusal kimliğin geleceği üzerine tezler geliştirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın temel iddiası; küreselleşme sürecinde ulusal kimliğin her türlü baskı ve nüfuz altına alınma çabalarına rağmen, biçim değiştirerek dahi olsa temel yapısını koruduğu, ulus devlet ve ulusal kimliklerin iddia edildiği gibi ölümünün gerçekleşmeyeceği ancak gücünü tarihsel yerleşmişlikten alan ulusal kimliklerin küreselleşme süreciyle birlikte salt politik ve ideolojik bir duruş olmaktan çıkıp, biçim değiştirerek kültürel yönleriyle ön plana çıkacağıdır.

The purpose of this study is to examine the issue of national identity in the process of globalization. The study is based on two complementary themes: Globalization and National Identity. The study is organized into three parts. In the first part of the study we focused on the meaning of globalization, what we should understand from it with respect to its political and economic aspects. The second part is mainly concerned with historical determinants of national identity and its place in social theory. In the final part, attention is paid to the issue of national identity in the age of globalization. The study is concluded with the analysis suggesting that despite the strong pressure from globalization national identity has managed to survive into the present and, it is most likely that, it will manage to survive well into the future as well by adapting itself into new conditions globalization brought about.
