A Research on Public Landscape Design in the Case of Van Winter City

Abstract

Kentsel mekanların devamlılığının sağlanmasında önemli bir faktör olan açık kamusal alanlar insan ilişkilerinin sürdürüldüğü toplum için sosyal, çevresel ve ekonomik yararları olan mekanlardır. Bu nedenle kentsel açık alanlar kent sağlığı ve kent estetiği açısından önem taşımaktadır. Van kentinde ise kış mevsimi soğuk ve uzun olduğundan insanlar kapalı mekânlarda zaman geçirmeyi tercih etmektedirler. Bu çalışmada kent ile iklim ilişkisi irdelenerek kış kentlerinde kamusal açık alan konforlarının sağlanması, bu alanların kullanımını kış aylarında da çekici ve canlı kılmak için peyzaj tasarım yaklaşımı ile yönlendirilebileceği ortaya konulması amaçlanmaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışma alanı olarak Van kış kentinin en işlek ve eski caddelerinden Cumhuriyet Caddesi ve Maraş Caddesi belirlenmiştir. Araştırma alanına yönelik kentsel peyzaj özelliklerinin saptanması, iki caddeye yönelik yerinde inceleme, gözlem yapılmıştır. Mekânsal analizler başlığı altında fiziksel ve bağlantılık özellikler analizi, yüzey malzemeleri, bitkilendirme ve su yüzeyleri, donatı elemanları ve doluluk-boşluk analizleri yapılmıştır. Değerlendirmeler doğrultusunda kentsel yaşam kalitesini artırmak amacıyla, kış kentine uyumlu, kamusal peyzajının iklim temelli işlevsel ve estetik yönden iyileştirilmesine yönelik Cumhuriyet ve Maraş Caddesi peyzaj tasarım önerileri geliştirilmiştir. Çalışma sonuçları benzer özellikler taşıyan bölgeler için mevcut kamusal peyzajların iklim temelli işlevsel ve estetik yönlerinden iyileştirilmesi ve bölgedeki kamusal peyzajlarda yaşam kalitesini artıracak nitelikte bir altlık oluşturabileceği düşünülmektedir.

Open public spaces, which are an important factor in ensuring the continuity of urban spaces, are the ones with social, environmental, and economic benefits for the society in which human relations are maintained. For this reason, urban open spaces are important in terms of urban health and urban aesthetics. In the city of Van, on the other hand, people prefer to spend time indoors since the winter season is cold and long. The purpose of this is to reveal whether the relationship between the city and the climate can be guided by the landscape design approach in order to provide the comfort of public open spaces in winter cities and to make the use of these spaces attractive and lively in the winter months. Accordingly, Cumhuriyet Street and Maraş Street, which are the busiest and oldest streets of the winter city of Van, were determined as the study area. The urban landscape characteristics of the research area were determined, and on-site inspection and observation for two streets were carried out. Under the title of spatial analysis, physical and connectivity properties analysis, surface materials, vegetation and water surfaces, reinforcement elements and occupancy-space analyzes were also made. In line with the evaluations, to increase the quality of urban life, Cumhuriyet and Maraş Street landscape design proposals have been developed for the improvement of the public landscape in terms of climate-based, functional, and aesthetic, compatible with the winter city. It is thought that the results of the study can improve the existing public landscapes in terms of climate-based functional and aesthetic aspects for regions with similar characteristics and create a base that will increase the quality of life in the public landscapes in the region.
