The Foundations of Geometric Abstraction in Turkish Painting and Its Reflections on Erol Akyavaş's Works
Abstract
We can say that the formation process of art is a purely internal search or the power of expression to come to life with an aesthetic concern. This perception, which has shown a continuous development and transformation from the first age to the present, is an innate situation that has come to life with social and regional expressions in the light of religious values, and has spread to all areas of life. On the basis of aesthetic values, the reflected art has passed through many stages, and at the last point, it has gained an interpretation by taking into account the spiritual and inner state of the artist with an effect on the work. As a result of the positive and negative effects of the modern world on human life, it has undertaken a guiding task to the world, sometimes as a reaction and sometimes as an illuminating light. The perception of abstract art, in terms of its inner and spiritual aspects, has pioneered a powerful way of expression with lines, tones, geometric shapes and a blotchy expression, by offering the opportunity to travel to an endless dream world. This value has undoubtedly been the concept of mysticism, which has solid conceptual foundations, its past is as old as the history of humanity, and with its feature of being a permanent port, people reach enlightenment at the point of reaching inner satisfaction. This mentality, which has its counterpart in all regions of the east and west, has found its place in many religious structures and has been the key to philosophical discourses, religious thoughts, and many concepts that we have difficulty in explaining. The cornerstones of abstract art have been built on this mentality, and the point to be reached has been the esoteric aspect of matter. Artists such as Kandinsky, Mondrian Malevich and Klee, who are among the leading names of Abstract art in the Western Painting art, were examined, the Theosophical mentality that they were influenced by conceptually was investigated and the points they were affected by were determined. In this sense, Erol Akyavaş's understanding of art, who gave expression to the traditional understanding in Turkish painting art with a contemporary approach, was examined, and the works he made with the geometric abstraction method were examined. The similarities with the artists were evaluated.
