Comparative Investigation of Some Mineral Levels on Patients With Osteomyelitis

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, 25?40 yaş gurubu, osteomyelit tanısı konup herhangi bir tedavi almayan kadın ve erkek hastalarda çinko (Zn), bakır (Cu), demir (Fe), magnezyum (Mg), kalsiyum (Ca), potasyum (K), Fe bağlama ve total Fe gibi bazı mineral madde düzeylerinin araştırılması ve hastalıkla olası ilişkisinin tespiti amaçlandı. Çalışmaya 20 sağlıklı (kontrol grubu) birey (12 erkek, 8 kadın) ile osteomyelit tanısı konmuş fakat tedaviye alınmamış 40 gönüllü hasta (osteomyelit grubu; 24 erkek, 16 kadın) katıldı. Kontrol ve osteomyelit gruplarında; yaş, boy, kilo ve beden kitle indeksleri birbirine yakın olan bireyler çalışma kapsamına alındı. Çalışmaya katılan kişilerden en az 12 saatlik bir açlık döneminin ardından kan alındı, serumları çıkarıldı ve analiz edileceği güne kadar -80 oC'de saklandı. Serum Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, Fe, total Fe ve Fe bağlama değerleri ticari kitler kullanılarak otoanalizörde, serum Cu ve Zn değerleri asetilen gazı ile flame yöntemi ile Atomik Absorbsiyon Spektrofotometresinde tespit edildi. Osteomyelitli hastaların serum mineral madde değerlerinin sağlıklı bireylerinkine göre anlamlı bir değişme göstermediği, ancak osteomyelitli hastalarda bazı mineral madde değerleri arasında bir takım negatif korelasyonların oluşabileceği görüldü. Osteomyelitli hastalara uygulanacak tedavide, mineral madde değerleri arasında oluşan bu negatif korelasyonun göz önünde bulundurulmasının tedavinin etkinliği açısından önemli olabileceği sonucuna varıldı.Anahtar sözcükler: Osteomyelit, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, Fe, total Fe, Fe bağlama, korelasyon

This study was designed to investigate the levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), Fe binding and total Fe of patients with osteomyelitis who were aging 25-40 years old and diagnosed but not get any treatment, and their relationship with the disease. Twenty healthy (control) individuals (12 male, 8 female) and 40 voluntary patients with osteomyelitis (24 male, 16 female) were chosen as subjects. Control and osteomyelitis groups were matched for age, sex and body mass index status. After an 12 hours of fasting period, blood samples were taken and the serums were obtained for the determination of mineral levels. All samples were stored frozen at ?800 C until the day of the analysis. Serum levels of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, Fe, total Fe and Fe binding were determined on autoanalyser by using commercial kits, serum Cu and Zn levels were determined on a Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer by flame method with acetylene gas. There was not any statistical difference (P>0.05) between the serum minerals levels of healthy subjects and patient with osteomyelitis. However, there was some interesting negative (P<0.05) correlations, which were not observed in control subjects, among some of the serum minerals of patients with osteomyelitis. Therefore, it might be important for the efficiency of the treatment to take into consideration of these negative correlations during the treatment of the osteomyelitis.Keywords: Osteomyelitis, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, Fe, total Fe, Fe binding, correlation
