Abstract
In this study, naturally occuring Onopordum L. species of Turkey were evaluated by means of morphological, karyological, palynological, molecular and ecological features. Habitat features, IUCN categories and geographical distributions of the species were also given with species identification keys and descriptions. Affinities between these taxa were determined by DNA sequences. Pollens of the taxa belonging to the genus Onopordum in Turkey were examined with light and scanning electron microscopes. Pollen grains are trizonocolporate, oblate-spheroidal and ornamentation is echinate. Tectum is verrucate/perforate between spines. Karyological studies revealed that, the chromosome number of the 20 taxa studied were all found as n=17. In this study, known as the doubtful record of taxon, O. canum Eig's determined that the three different localities in our country. It was detected that O. rhodense is not in Turkey. Onopordum bracteatum var. arachnoideum is transferred to O. myriacanthum as O. myriacanthum subsp. arachnoideum comb. & stat. nova. Also, in the present study, O. hasankeyfense S.M.Pınar & Behçet was introduced to the scientific world as a new species. At the end of this study, 20 Onopordum species (21 taxa) grown in Turkey have been established and 6 species (7 taxa) are endemic to Turkey.
