Determinant Factors in the Political Preferences of Individuals With Disabilities: a Research on Disabled People's Associations in Van

Abstract

Bu çalışma engelli bireylerin siyasal tercihlerini belirleyen faktörleri araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma evreni olarak Van merkezde bulunan engelli derneklerinin üyeleri belirlenmiştir. Nitel araştırma metodu benimsenerek, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formuna dayalı bir araştırma yürütülmüştür. Çalışma kapsamında işitme, görme ve bedensel engelli bireylerden oluşan 10'u kadın toplam 30 kişi ile görüşülmüştür. Görüşmeler ana temalara ayrılarak veri analizi yapılmış olup aile, aşiret, din, STK ve engellilik gibi değişkenlerin, engelli bireylerin siyasal tercihlerine ne oranda etki ettiği değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları itibariyle, bölgenin demografik yapısından kaynaklı aile, aşiret, din gibi kurumların birer aktör olarak engelli bireyler üzerinde de farklı düzeylerde etkili olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca, siyasal yaşama katılma hakkı büyük oranda engellenen bireylerin, siyasi partilere güven duymadıkları tespiti yapılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, engelli bireylerin, oy verme gibi fazla çaba gerektirmeyen siyasal etkinliğe katılım sağlama; seçilme gibi aktif çaba gerektiren siyasal etkinliklerden ise kaçınma eğilimi sergiledikleri görülmüştür.

This study aims to investigate the factors that determine the political preferences of people with disabilities. The research universe is the members of disabled associations located in the city of Van. Adopting a qualitative research method, the research was conducted through semi-structured interview form. Within the scope of the study, a total of 30 people, 10 of whom are women, consist of hearing, physical and visual disabilities were interviewed. Interviews were analysed based on certain themes and in this sense, the effects of variables such as family, tribe, religion, non-governmental organizations and 'disability' on the political preferences of individuals with disabilities were evaluated. The research results show that the institutions such as family, tribe and religion originating from the demographic structure of the region had different levels of impact on disabled individuals as social actors. Moreover, it is ascertained that the individuals with disabilities whose right to participate in political life is largely prevented do not trust political parties. In conclusion, it is found out that individuals with disabilities tend to participate in political activities that do not require much effort, such as voting while avoiding political activities that require active effort such as being candidates in the elections.
