Abstract
Cities are places in which cultures and civilizations are formed, an intense flux of life is experienced and which give direction to life. A city hosting different civilisations in the past can incorporate numerous elements pertained to these civilizations and carry them to the future, thought it may lose ıts functionality in time. In every nations? literature, there exist a city which possesses a great status recounted often. In Turkish Literature, this type city is İstanbul which has become capital to empires and which has long deserved such a status under the legacy of such dignity. In the novels and stories, particularly those of Tanzimat and Servet-i Fünun period, it has preserved the first rank of status and has been chosen as a setting both in National İndependence and Republican years during Anatolian exodus. İstanbul has been employed as a worthwhile a setting especially in Divan Literature and has been subject of such emotions as love, hate, nostalgia, hatred based on its beauty, national identity and the viewpoint of the poets and writers.
