Article Are Community Pharmacies the Best Purchasing Channel for Cosmetic Products? Prioritization of Consumer Preferences Via Analytical Hierarchy Process(Istanbul Univ, Fac Pharmacy, 2022) Babalitas, Dilan; Arslan, MirayBackground and Aims: Many different purchasing channels play an essential role in meeting cosmetic product demand worldwide. These include supermarkets, cosmetic markets, community pharmacies, beauty salons, internet retailing, and shopping complexes. This study's main objective is to prioritize consumers' cosmetic product purchasing channel preferences. The originality of this study lies in being the first study that addressed customers' choice of cosmetic product purchasing channels via the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Methods: Firstly, a questionnaire was conducted (n=287) to determine cosmetic product purchasing channel selection criteria. Cosmetic product purchasing channel alternatives were prioritized among the first questionnaire results via the AHP with 12 consumers who reside in the city center of Van, Turkey and buy at least two cosmetic products per year. Results: As a result of the study, community pharmacies (46.9%) were found to be the best alternative among the cosmetic product purchasing channels, followed by cosmetics stores (24.1%). The most important criterion affecting the selection of cosmetic product purchasing channels is satisfaction with the consultancy (25.2%), followed by advice from health care providers (22.1%). Conclusion: It has been observed that consumers prefer community pharmacies more than other purchasing channels when purchasing cosmetic products. Understanding customer needs, expectations, and experiences is vital for optimizing the quality of the offered service. Thus, pharmacies with a significant market share in the cosmetics sector can further their cosmetics services by considering the consumer demands highlighted in this study.Article Determination of Factors Influencing Pharmacists While Recommending Immune-Enhancing Products Via Analytic Hierarchy Process(Galenos Publ House, 2022) Tarhan, Nilay; Arslan, MirayObjectives: Immune enhancers are attracting attention day by day. Besides, during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there has been an increasing demand for immune enhancers. Pharmacists are seen as trustable providers of complementary and alternative medicines, dietary and herbal supplements, immune-enhancers, and so on. This study aims to prioritization criteria that affect community pharmacists' recommending behavior regarding immune enhancers.Materials and Methods: This paper adopts the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to rank different criteria substantial for affecting community pharmacists' recommending behavior regarding immune enhancers. In this direction, firstly seven criteria were identified through literature review and views of pharmacists who have community pharmacy experiences. These are; (i) ease of access, (ii) selling price, (iii) package, (iv) content (appropriateness to patient health status), (v) expectation of patient, (vi) quality, and (vii) trust in the manufacturer. Then, a questionnaire including criteria was prepared and delivered to community pharmacists. The data obtained from 93 participants were transferred to the Super Decisions software. The hierarchical structure of the AHP was established and pair-wise comparisons were made. Results: This study showed that the most important criterion was the ease of access (28%). Secondly, pharmacists give importance to the content of the product, while advising immune-enhancers (22%). Besides, it was determined that the least important criterion was the package of the product (4%).Conclusion: This study will contribute to the literature by facilitating the process of assessing factors that pharmacists pay attention to while recommending immune-enhancing products. Additionally, the present study results will shed light on firms producing such products, to shape their supply chain management strategies, especially for marketing and sales.Article Determination of Pharmacists' Opinions About Collegial Solidarity(Galenos Publ House, 2021) Sozen Sahne, Bilge; Ulutas Deniz, Elif; Kabas, Onur; Tarhan, Nilay; Arslan, Miray; Akbal Dagistan, OzlemObjectives: Colleague solidarity, which emphasizes trust, independent thinking skills, and sharing, enables the problems encountered in the health service delivery to be dealt with effectively. This study aims to identify the current situation regarding colleague solidarity among pharmacists, which is also included in Turkey's pharmacy legislation. Materials and Methods: "Colleague Solidarity Scale Among Nurses" was used in this study conducted with the questionnaire technique. The scale comprises of 23 items and was scored using a 5-point Likert scale. In addition, there were three demographic questions and six questions to get information from participants related to collegial solidarity in the questionnaire. Results: As a result of the exploratory factor analysis (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin: 0.837), three factors reported 51.029% of the total variance. The t-test indicated a significant difference between gender groups only in the negative opinions about solidarity (NOS) factor (p=0.000). Females exhibited more negative thoughts about solidarity. The ANOVA showed a significant difference in the academic solidarity (AS) factor (p=0.007) among the participants' works in community pharmacies and universities. Pharmacists working in universities had higher means in the AS factor. Moreover, the number of working years made significant differences in the emotional solidarity factor (p=0.000) and NOS factor (p=0.002). Additionally, it was found that the average responses in all factors of the participants who thought that they supported their colleagues in need and that solidarity with their colleagues increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic period (p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings suggest that colleague solidarity among pharmacists should be addressed profoundly as an element specified in legislation and education processes. It is crucial to determine the level of colleague solidarity and improve it using this scale for different practice areas in pharmacy. Article Examining and Improving Senior Pharmacy Students' Knowledge of Clinically Critical Drug-Drug Interactions(international Pharmaceutical Federation, 2022) Oguz, Fatih; Arslan, MirayBackground: Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are essential issues health professionals should consider. Article Investigation of Factors Affecting Ethical Decision-Making Process of Community Pharmacists in Professional Life(Marmara Univ, 2019) Arslan, Miray; Tarhan, Nilay; Kalender, Selin; Sar, SevgiEthics is defined as questioning the practice of moral standards and whether moral standards are logical or not. The struggle to determine the rules that should be followed by those who demonstrate activities in a particular field and the ethical principles of practice that is specific to it reveal the concept of professional ethics. The principles of professional ethics, is very important for a profession, have become more attractive in the field of pharmacy as it is in every field. In this regard, pharmacists need to consider the professional ethical principles in relation to their patients, colleagues or other employees. This study aims to determine the perceptions of community pharmacists about professional ethics through a sample case can be encountered in a pharmacy. In this context, the prepared questionnaire, consists of 24 questions, was conducted to randomly select 150 community pharmacists face to face in Ankara. The obtained data were statistically analyzed via SPSS 18.0 package program. Firstly, descriptive statistical analyzes were performed and followed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). As a result of EFA four factors are obtained as: "financial and legal pressure", "patient benefit", "colleague pressure", and "patient confidence". These factors explained 68.033% of the total variance. t-test and ANOVA were used to determine the effects of demographics of pharmacists on the factors. Obtained results are of great importance in determining the perceptions of pharmacists regarding professional ethics. Knowing the factors affecting the pharmacist's behavior in accordance with the professional ethics will shed light on community pharmacy practices.Article Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Community Pharmacy Personnel About Implementation of the Pharmaceutical Track and Trace System, in Turkey(Soc Stiinte Farmaceutice Romania, 2021) Erdocan, Ozlem Nazan; Dagistan, Ozlem Akbal; Arslan, Miray; Cig, Gulnaz; Sayar, Ali; Erdogan, Mehmet SarperPharmaceutical Track and Trace System (PTTS) is a successful implementation of Track and Trace approach which has been applied since 2010 in Turkey. There are many reasons for the behavior that leads individuals to share their prescription medicines. However, there is a lack in the literature to investigate individuals' medicine-sharing behavior and related antecedents and outcomes of this behavior. Objective(s): The main objective of this study is to model individuals' prescription medicine borrowing (PMB) behavior via the structural equation model based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Methods: A measurement tool was developed according to TPB. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine subfactors of PBM behavior. In the second step, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to confirm whether there is a relationship between the observed variables and their underlying latent constructs. Finally, a structural equation model was conducted to specify the relationships between latent variables. IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Software) version 22 and LISREL 8.80 were used for data analysis. Results: Study findings reveal that the participants' attitudes and intentions towards PMB are low, and the rate of exhibiting this behavior is also low. In the proposed prescription medicine borrowing behavior model, the positive effect of attitude towards PMB, perceived behavioral control related PMB, and subjective norm about PMB on intention towards PMB were found statistically significant. Intention towards PMB has been found to have a positive statistically significant effect on PMB behavior. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it is possible to say that TPB is an appropriate theory for modeling PMB. Thus, this model will shed light on healthcare providers and policy-makers to avoid individuals from the adverse effects of PMB behavior.Article Modelling Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Students' Intentions To Learn About Their Roles in Environmental Sustainability(Elsevier, 2024) Arslan, Miray; Franklin, Bryony Dean; Murdan, SudaxshinaArticle Paediatric Oral Dosage Forms: Why Do Caregivers Need Drug Modifications and How(Istanbul Univ, Fac Pharmacy, 2024) Dagistan, Ozlem Akbal; Arslan, Miray; Isci, Fevziye; Temurtas, Gamze NurBackground and Aims: A major obstacle to developing appropriate medications is the lack of understanding of what is acceptable for paediatric patients and the types of alterations that can be made to the dosage form. This study aimed to identify problems encountered when administering oral dosage forms to paediatric patients and solutions identified by patients' caregivers. Methods: A questionnaire was developed by the research team based on relevant literature and their experiences. The first part involves questions to determine the demographic characteristics of the paediatric patient and their caregivers. The second section includes 11 statements about the problems experienced by caregivers regarding the child's medication use. The last part consists of 4 closed-ended questions and one open-ended question to evaluate the solutions offered by the patient's caregivers. Results: A total of 419 caregivers participated in the study. In particular, it has been revealed that children experience problems regarding the taste, smell, and size of medicines. When the caregivers' solutions are evaluated, it was observed that the most common method is convincing or forcing the child to take, followed by dosage form alterations such as breaking, crushing, and dividing the form. Conclusion: This is the first study to evaluate problems encountered when administering oral dosage forms to paediatric patients in T & uuml;rkiye. The results show that the absence of age-appropriate medicines forces caregivers to alter their dosage forms. This study also highlights the necessity of considering user preferences in the dosage form design, which is an essential parameter of the target product quality profile that ensures patient compliance.Article Pharmaceutical Care Services During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Turkey: Proposal of a Holistic Approach(Bezmialem Vakif Univ, 2022) Arslan, Miray; Akbal Dagistan, Ozlem; Sar, SevgiCommunity pharmacists, who are among the primary healthcare service providers, are regarded as the closest and most accessible healthcare professionals. Unfortunately, patient counseling, one of the most important pharmacy profession tasks, cannot he performed in exceptional cases, which can endanger patient safety. The coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic process we are facing today is an example of these particular situations in Turkey. Partial curfews imposed within the scope of COVID-19 pandemic measures have also increased problems. Therefore, there is a need for a pharmaceutical care service network that will enable individuals who do nor have aces to pharmacies, who arc in risk groups, or whose mobility is restricted due to pandemic or disaster, to reach their prescribed medicines safely under pharmacist consultancy. In this regard, establishing a pharmaceutical care service network on a scientific and systematic basis may solve the current problems, mostly encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. Designing a network within the framework of vehicle routing and assignment problems is important in ensuring patients' rapid access to prescribed medications and preventing unfair competition among pharmacies.Article Psychometric Assessment of Pharmacists' Counseling in Dementia(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2023) Tarhan, Nilay; Arslan, MirayObjective: This study aimed to explore pharmacists' counseling for dementia by developing a measurement tool based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Methods: A survey was applied online to community pharmacists; in total, 190 community pharmacists participated in the study. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and Mann-Whitney U test were performed. Results: A six-factor structure was obtained from the EFA, and the CFA confirmed the structure. These factors explained 71.294% of the total variance. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the factors ranged from 0.728 to 0.913. In addition, the pharmacists rated themselves as having positive attitudes and intentions toward counseling for dementia. Differences in these factors were found between the groups based on their participation in vocational training on dementia. Conclusion: The developed measurement tool had a satisfactory construct and convergent and discriminant validities and reliabilities. Practice implications: The developed measurement tool can be used to investigate pharmacists' self-reported counseling for dementia and can also be applied to the counseling behavior of pharmacists in various health conditions.Article Selection of the Polymers Used in Oral Dispersible Films Via Analytical Hierarchy Process(Marmara Univ, 2024) Dagistan, Ozlem Akbal; Arslan, MirayMany different active ingredients and excipients are used in the production of pharmaceutical products. Selection of the most suitable active ingredients and excipients is one of the most important stages of pharmaceutical production. When choosing the active ingredients and excipients, several factors and alternatives should be considered. In this instance, it is thought that one of the multi-criteria decision-making techniques, an operational research model, the Analytical Hierarchy Process, can assist in identifying the excipients during the pre-formulation stage. Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process, the current study seeks to identify the polymers most suitable for producing oral dispersible film formulations. The problem's criteria and potential solutions were determined before establishing the goal. Then, pairwise comparison matrices were generated, and the generated matrices were sent to the Super Decisions Version 3.2 software to reach a solution/result. The study's findings showed that the forming capacity is the most crucial factor affecting the choice of polymer to be used in the pre-formulation of oral dispersible films. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (14.89%) was found to be the best alternative among the polymers, followed by hydroxyethyl cellulose (12.04%) and carboxymethyl cellulose (11.58%). It was revealed that the least preferred polymers were sodium alginate (5.6%) and pectin (6.8%), which are natural polymers. It is clear from the outcomes of the various pre-formulation investigations that polymer selection in oral dispersible film formulations is one of the most critical points. This study provides a new approach to selecting the most appropriate polymers in oral dispersible film formulations.Article A Structural Equation Model for Behaviors of Pharmacy Students Toward Mentally Ill Patients(Springer, 2020) Arslan, MirayAs future pharmacists, pharmacy students have the chance to obtain necessary information about mental illnesses in their faculty education and internships. Their gained observations, experiences, awareness, and knowledge throughout their degree will affect their beliefs, attitudes, and future behaviors toward mentally ill patients. In this regard, the study aims to determine pharmacy students' actions towards mentally ill patients by evaluating its antecedents, such as beliefs and attitudes. A survey was applied to pharmacy students in Ankara, Turkey. Exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the factor structure, and confirmatory factor analysis was used to verify them. Then, the comprehensive structural equation model was proposed to explain the relations of them to each other. Behavior toward mentally ill patients (BMIP) model was proposed. According to the BMIP model, students' beliefs about how mentally patients are dangerous, and how mental illness is incurable are posited to be positively related to negative attitudes towards those with mental illness, which in turn influence behaviors towards them. The BMIP model can be a guide not only for pharmacy students' behaviors in their professional life but also for educators at pharmacy faculties for orientating students accurately about mental illnesses. Mental illnesses should gain more importance in pharmacy education not only to increase the positive behaviors of the students, but also to improve their counseling skills.Article Turkiye’de Hastaların Farmasötik Bakım Hizmetlerini Kullanma ve Ödeme Yapma Gönüllülüklerinin Değerlendirilmesi(2024) Alabdullah, Zehra; Arslan, Miray; Arslan, MirayEczacıların hastalıkları önleme, ilaç takibi, hasta uyumunu artırma gibi birçok temel görevi kapsayan danışmanlık rolleri, sağlık hizmetlerini önemli ölçüde geliştirmektedir.
