Article The Mutagenic Effects of Sodium Nitrite and Monosodium Glutamate Used as Food Additives Demonstrated by the Salmonella Microsome Test System(1991) Akin, A.; Sümer, S.In this study, the mutagenicity of sodium nitrite (an antimicrobial agent) and monosodium glutamate (a flavoring agent), which are widely used as food additives, have been evaluated. They were tested for mutagenicity in the Salmonella/microsome test system by employing plate-incorporation test in the absence and presence of rat-liver fraction, S 9. No mutagenic activity was seen for monosodium glutamate in the Salmonella/microsome test system by using the tester strains Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA1535 and TA1538. Sodium nitrite was found mutagenic on S. typhimurium TA1535, whereas it was found weakly mutagenic on S. typhimurium TA100, in the presence and absence of rat-liver fraction, S 9.Article Torsion of a Spermatocele(Williams & Wilkins, 1995) ODABAS, O; Aydın, S; Yılmaz, YArticle An Anatomical Study on the Arteries To the Left Adrenal-Gland of Sheep and Goat(verlag Hans Huber, 1995) KARADAG, HThe arteries supplying the left adrenal gland were determined in 12 mature sheep and goats of both sexes and different breeds. The adrenal branches arose from the first and second lumbal arteries in both species but in one goat they originated from the first lumbal artery while in another from the last intercostal artery. The cranial adrenal branches arose from the celiac artery in 8 sheep, both from the celiac and cranial mesenteric arteries in 3 sheep and from the common celiacomesenteric trunk in 1 sheep. In all goats the cranial adrenal branches originated from the cranial mesenteric artery. The caudal adrenal branches arose singly from the renal artery in all sheep and goats. In both species any branch from the aorta or caudal phrenic arteries to the adrenal gland was not seen.Article Enzymatic Analysis of Liver Samples From Rainbow-Trout for Diagnosis of Blue-Green Algae-Induced Toxicosis(Amer veterinary Medical Assoc, 1995) SAHIN, A; TENCALLA, FG; DIETRICH, DR; MEZ, K; NAEGELI, HMicrocystin and related toxic peptides produced by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are potent and selective inhibitors of protein phosphatases 1 and 2A. We adapted existing enzymatic techniques to analyze the liver of rainbow trout after oral administration of hepatotoxic cyanobacteria. Liver tissue was removed 3 and 12 hours after treatment, and phosphatase activity was determined in liver extracts, using a specific phosphoprotein substrate. In all samples from fish exposed to toxic cyanobacteria, phosphatase activity was suppressed, whereas the control enzyme, lactate dehydrogenase, present in the same liver extract, was not affected by cyanobacteria. Thus, experimental poisoning by hepatotoxic cyanobacteria resulted in an abnormally low ratio of phosphatase to lactate dehydrogenase activity in the liver extracts. These results indicate that specific inhibition of phosphatases 1 and 2A may provide a useful diagnostic tool to determine the early effects of cyanobacteria toxic peptides directly in liver samples from poisoned animals. Although this test was developed with rainbow trout, it should be possible to extend the analysis of liver phosphatase activity to other species, including sheep and cattle, which are frequently affected by hepatotoxic cyanobacteria.Other Perforated Gastric-Ulcer in Children - Case-Report(Assoc Soc Scientifique Med Belges, 1995) DILEK, ON; SEKEER, B; DILEK, FH; ONER, AF12-year-old boy in whom a benign gastric ulcer perforated into the free abdominal cavity is reported. He has underwent emergency operation with a preoperative diagnosis of acute peritonitis due to perforation of peptic ulcer. Gastric ulcer is a rare disease of childhood. The illness was discussed in view of the literature.Article Suicidality in Patients With Panic Disorder: the Association With Comorbidity(Editions Scientifiques Elsevier, 1996) Agargun, MY; Kara, HTo examine the relationship between suicidality and panic disorder, we evaluated 91 patients with panic disorder. Patients with comorbid diagnosis were more suicidal than patients with pure panic disorder. These data suggest that among patients with panic disorder, suicidal behavior is associated with comorbid diagnosis.Article A Suspected Case of Bilateral Crossed Renal Ectopia or Bilateral Jet Effect(Karger, 1996) Aydin, S; Odabas, O; Yilmaz, Y; Bozkurt, M; Atilla, MK; Onur, D; Dogdu, GACrossed renal ectopia is a relatively unusual congenital anomaly. Bilateral crossed renal ectopia is considered the rarest form of this anomaly. A 19-year-old girl with intermittent flank pain was admitted to our department. Various clinical and laboratory examinations were carried out. Excretory urography showed a normal upper urinary tract anatomy, whereas the distal ends of the ureters crossed each other in the pelvis, which suggested bilateral crossed renal ectopia.Article Clinical Importance of the Minimal Cancellous Diameter of Lower Thoracic and Lumbar Vertebral Pedicles(Wiley-Liss Inc., 1996) Islam, C.; Güzel, M.B.; Sakul, B.U.Transpedicular spinal fixation is a widely used method in vertebral surgery, but it suffers from complications due to mismatches between the screw and pedicle. Therefore, information on minimal cancellous (MCD) and minimal external diameters (MED) of the pedicle is highly important for vertebral surgery. To determine these diameters and their ratios, 2,808 measurements of 1,404 pedicles of 702 human vertebrae were made from Th1 to L5. We found that the mean ratio of MCD to MED was 72.2%, MCD to vertical diameter (VD) was 41.7%, and MCD to transverse diameter (TD) was 62.2% in all levels. We recommend that these results be considered prior to pedicular fixation operations and design of new implantable devices. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.Article Failure of Artificial Insemination of Husband's Semen in the Treatment of Male Infertility(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996) Aydin, S.; Inci, O.; Alagöl, B.; Hüseyin, I.; Kaya, E.; Dellaloǧlu, G.In the management of infertility, in case semen quality is found insufficient and could not be improved by medical means, handling the available spermatozoa in the most beneficial way has been aimed. Thus, artificial insemination with low quality semen has become a therapeutic alternative. In this study homologous artificial insemination has been used to treat infertility caused by oligoasthenospermia. Eighteen couples have been treated for 58 cycles by intrauterine or paracervical insemination using cervical cups. During the same period 42 cycles with timed vaginal intercourse have been assessed. Though no pregnancies could be obtained following artificial insemination, one pregnancy occurred during no-treatment cycles.Article High Cholesterol Levels in Patients With Sleep Panic(1996) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Algün, E.; Şekeroglu, R.; Tarakçioǧlu, M.Article The Efficacy of Fluoxetine in the Treatment of Premature Ejaculation: a Double-Blind Placebo Controlled Study(Williams & Wilkins, 1996) Kara, H; Aydin, S; Agargun, MY; Odabas, O; Yilmaz, YPurpose: The efficacy of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor fluoxetine in the treatment of premature ejaculation was examined. Materials and Methods: The study comprised 17 patients with premature ejaculation who presented to the urology clinic of our medical school. In this double-blind study the patients were randomized into treatment groups receiving 20 mg. fluoxetine daily for 1 week and 40 mg. daily afterward (group 1) or 1 capsule placebo daily for 1 week and 2 capsules daily afterward (group 2). The groups were evaluated according to the latent period of intravaginal ejaculation. Results: The latent period of intravaginal ejaculation in group 1 was significantly longer than that in group 2. Nausea, headache and insomnia were reported side effects. Conclusions: Fluoxetine may be regarded as a safe and effective alternative in the treatment of premature ejaculation.Article The Electrocardiogram of the Pekin Duck(Amer Assoc Avian Pathologists, 1996) Cinar, A; Bagci, C; Belge, F; Uzun, MIn this study, standard limb lead electrocardiograms (EGG) were recorded in 50 Pekin ducks. The ECG exhibited P, R, S, and T waves. A Q wave was observed in 30% of leads aVR aVL. All waves in lead I were of very low amplitude or almost isoelectric. The P wave was 20% negative, 80% positive in lead aVR and always positive in other leads. The duration and amplitude of P wave were 0.025 sec and 0.17 mV, respectively and the P-R interval was 0.06 sec in lead II. A Q wave was observed in 30% of leads aVR and aVL but was invisible in other leads. The duration of QRS complex was 0.036 sec and its amplitude was 0.069 mV. The S wave (rS) was greater than the R wave in leads III and aVE The R and S waves were equal in lead III (66%). The mean duration and amplitude of T wave were 0.05 sec and 0.22 mV, respectively. The T wave was negative in leads aVR and aVL and positive in other leads. The Q-T interval was 0.10 sec. The mean heart rate was 281.3 (220-375) beats/min. The average value of the mean electrical axis was +147 degrees (+95 degrees to -160 degrees).Article Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Panic Disorder: the Association With Major Depression(Editions Scientifiques Elsevier, 1996) Agargun, MY; Kara, H; Alpkan, L; Ucisik, MTo examine the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, we evaluated 69 outpatients with panic disorder. We found a 30% prevalence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms had an earlier onset of illness and were more likely to have current and past major depression than the other ones.Article Trichobezoars as a Cause of Gastrointestinal Obstructions: the Rapunzel Syndrome(1996) Şeker, B.; Dilek, O.N.; Karaayvaz, M.We report a trichobezoar extending from the stomach through the entire length of the small intestine to the caecum. A case history of a 6-year-old girl with trichobezoar is described. She is the ninth patient with Rapunzel syndrome in the literature. The epidemiology, clinical features, complications, treatment and literature are briefly reviewed.Article Protection of Intestinal Anastomoses in Septic Environment With Peritoneal Graft and Polyglycolic Acid Mesh : an Experimental Study(ARSMB-KVBMG, 1996) Dilek, O.N.; Bakir, B.; Dilek, F.H.; Demirel, H.; Yiǧit, M.F.We carried out an experimental study in dogs to evaluate the outcome of large bowel anastomosis with 6 stitches (Group C, n : 6) in a septic environment with protection by a polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh (Group M, n : 12) or peritoneal graft (Group P, n : 12). Thirty dogs were used to compare the techniques. Two dogs in each group were re-operated after 3, 5, 7, 14, 28 and 90 days. They were evaluated for adhesion formation, lumen diameter (anastomotic index), clinical features, histologic appearance and quality of healing at the anastomotic sites. All dogs in group P and group M survived, whereas 2 dogs in the control group died of anastomotic leakage and 3 dogs were re-operated for anastomotic leakage and peritonitis. In group M, one dog was reoperated because of the anastomotic leakage and two dogs were reoperated because of the anastomotic stenosis. Also, 4 anastomoses showed evidence of moderate stenosis. In group P, three anastomoses were graded as minimal stenosis. Histopathologic evaluation showed more complete epithelization, less inflammation, and less adhesion in group P than group M. We could not find any study in the literature that described and compared both techniques. We report here the results of such a study.Article Efficacy of Testosterone, Trazodone and Hypnotic Suggestion in the Treatment of Non-Organic Male Sexual Dysfunction(Blackwell Science Ltd, 1996) Aydin, S; Odabas, O; Ercan, M; Kara, H; Agargun, MYObjective To examine the effects of hypnotic suggestions or the administration of testosterone or trazodone to impotent men with no detectable organic cause for the impotence. Patients and methods The study comprised 79 men in whom clinical and laboratory examinations revealed no organic cause for their impotence; 20 men (mean age 38.7 +/- 11.47 years) received testosterone. 21 men (mean age 39.5 +/- 10.73 years) received trazodone, 20 men (mean age 34.2 +/- 11.69 years) underwent hypnosis and 18 men (mean age 39.1 +/- 11.46 years) served as controls. They were assessed by interview 4, 6 and 8 weeks after starting treatment; the patient's reports were verified by interviewing their partners. Results Men who received a placebo had a 39% improvement in sexual function, while the rates of improvement in the treated groups were higher, but not significantly so. The success rates of testosterone and trazodone treatment and hypnotic suggestions were 60%, 67% and 80%, respectively. Conclusion Although the improvement was not statistically significant, treatment with testosterone and trazodone could be used as an adjuvant therapy in nonorganic male sexual dysfunction. The only treatment superior to placebo seemed to be hypnosis. A more effective treatment may be obtained by combining these therapeutic modalities, but this needs further study.Article Protection of Intestinal Anastomoses in Septic Environment With Peritoneal Graft and Polyglycolic Acid Mesh: an Experimental Study(Assoc Soc Scientifique Med Belges, 1996) Dilek, ON; Bakir, B; Dilek, FH; Demirel, H; Yigit, MFWe carried out an experimental study in dogs to evaluate the outcome of large bowel anastomosis with 6 stitches (Group C, n:6) in a septic environment with protection by a polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh (Group M, n:12) or peritoneal graft (Group P, n:12). Materials and Methods: A total of 52 children with phimosis was included in this study. Phimosis was graded according to severity. Of the patients 32 were given locally a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory ointment prepared in ophthalmic usage form from sterile diclofenac sodium ampules (not commercially available). The control group comprised 20 patients given sterile petrolatum ointment. Patients were seen before and after treatment, and graded according to retractibility and appearance of the foreskin. Treatment continued for 4 weeks with 3 applications daily. Results: Of the 32 patients 24 responded to therapy and 8 remained unchanged or had insufficient improvement. Three controls responded to therapy and 17 did not. There were no side effects. Conclusions: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory ointment application for phimosis may be an alternative to surgery and steroid application.Article Immunohistochemical Study on Histogenesis of Congenital Epulis and Review of the Literature(Blackwell Science, 1997) Ugras, S; Demirtas, I; Bekerecioglu, M; Kutluhan, A; Karakok, M; Peker, OCongenital epulis is a very rare lesion found only in newborn infants. This tumor is multiple in about 10% of reported cases, rarely with the simultaneous involvement of the maxilla and mandibula, as in this article. In the presented case, light microscopy demonstrated large eosinophilic granular cells arranged in solid nests that are separated by thin fibrovascular areas. The tumors in the maxilla and mandibula were investigated with a panel of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, and using immunoperoxidase methods on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Immunohistochemical studies revealed strong and diffuse cytoplasmic staining for neuron specific enolase and vimentin. However, all other reactions were negative. These results suggest that the congenital epulis may be derived from uncommitted nerve-related mesenchymal cells.Article Possible Value of Nasal Smear in Acute Maxillary Sinusitis: an Experimental Study(Scandinavian University Press, 1997) Kutluhan, A; Ugras, S; Berktas, M; Dilek, HF; Akpolat, N; Inalkac, EThe aim of this study is to determine the role of nasal smear in evaluating diagnosis and response to the treatment by the patient of acute maxillary sinusitis. We compared nasal smear and histopathological findings obtained from rabbits experimentally induced acute maxillary sinusitis. The animals were divided into two groups; one with blocked ostium and treated with antibiotic and the other applied natural ostiotomy, during a 4-week period. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in respect of recovery period. This conclusion was derived from nasal smear and biopsy findings. It was observed that nasal smear and biopsy findings were consistent with each other and with clinical findings. The results of this study revealed that nasal smear may be used in the diagnosis and treatment follow-up of acute maxillary sinusitis.
