Article Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Diethyl-Ether Extracts of Helichrysum Plicatum Dc. and Tanacetum Balsamita L. in Rats(Academic Journals inc, 2009) Karaca, M.; Ozbek, H.; Akkan, H. A.; Tutuncu, M.; Ozgokce, F.; Him, A.; Bakir, B.The aim of this study was to investigate anti-inflammatory activity of the diethyl ether extract of Tanacetum balsamita L. subsp. (TB) and Helichrysum plicatum DC. subsp. (HP) in carrageenan-induced inflammation in rats. Lambda carrageenan (0.05 mL) was injected into the subplantar region of the right hind paw to induce inflammation. Control group and the reference group were administered isotonic saline solution and indomethacin, respectively. TB extract was injected in doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg kg(-1) in the groups TB-25, TB-50 and TB-100, respectively. HP-25 HP-50 and HP-100 groups were injected HP extract in doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg kg(-1). Before the injections and 3 h after the injections the volume of right hind-paw of rats was measured using a plethysmometer. TB and HP had anti-inflammatory effects matching to that of the reference agent at all doses. It was found that reduction in the inflammation was 95.21% with indomethacin, 51.93% with TB-25, 52.55% with TB-50, 61.51% with TB-100, 70.73% with HP-25, 73.15% with HP-50 and 82.90% with HP-100. Median effective dose (ED50) value of TB and HP were found to be 81.484 and 73.030 mg kg(-1), respectively. The results showed that Tanacetum balsamita L. subsp. and Helichrysum plicatum DC. subsp. had a significant anti-inflammatory activity.Article The Effect of Tulathromycin Treatment on Biochemical Parameters in Montofon Calves With Pneumonia(Academic Journals inc, 2010) Ragbetli, C.; Ceylan, E.; Tanritanir, P.The purpose of this study is to examine changes in some biochemical parameters of treatment with tulathromycin in Montofon calves with pneumonia. For this purpose, 30 claves exhibiting clinical sings of pneumonia with fever, cough, lack of appetite, nasal flaring, mandibular lymph node enlargement dyspnea and nasal discharge were studied. A control group of 20 healthy calves was also studied. Blood samples were collected from the healthy and diseased calves before and after treatment with Draxxin (Tluthromycin-Pfizer). Compared to the control group Ca, K, total bilirubin, albumin, urea levels were affected (p<0.001) and Na (p<0.05) in the diseased animals and total protein, ALP, Glucose, Creatin levels were not affected in the diseased animals (p>0.05). Single dose tulathromycin therapy was characterized by significantly fewer treatment days, a higher response rate, significantly better reduction of pyrexia and fever and other pneumonia symptoms in calves requiring treatment.Article The Effects of Diethylether Extract of Helichrysum Plicatum Dc. A.; Bayram, I.; Cengiz, N.; Him, A.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the diethylether extract of Helichrysum plicatum DC. subsp. plicatum (HP) and Tanacetum balsamita L. subsp. balsamitoides (Sch. Bip.) Grierson (Asteraceae) (TB) in carbontetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute liver toxicity in rats. Acute liver toxicity was induced by injecting CCl(4) (0.8 mL kg(-1)) intraperitoneally for 7 days. The control group received isotonic saline only. The reference group received 50 mg kg(-1) silibinin. TB and HP extract was injected in doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg kg(-1). Body weights were measured daily during the experiment. On the 8th day of the experiments blood and liver samples were collected. Serum Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured in serum samples. Tissue samples were evaluated histopathologically. Some of the rats in TB and HP groups died during the experiments. Serum ALT levels were higher in the TB and HP groups than those in the CCl(4) group. Histopathological findings were similar in the CCl(4), TB and HP groups. The body weight loss was more in the TB and HP groups compared to that of the CCl(4) group. It is concluded that the diethylether extract of Helichrysum plicatum DC. subsp. plicatum and Tanacetum balsamita L. subsp. balsamitoides (Sch. Bip.) Grierson (Asteraceae) did not have a protective effect in carbontetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute liver toxicity in rats and even exacerbated the toxicity.Article Effects of Sildenafil Citrate on the Hematological Parameters in the Early Phase of Wound Healing in Diabetic Rats(Academic Journals inc, 2011) Tas, A.; Karasu, A.; Comba, B.; Aksu, D. S.; Duz, E.; Tanritanir, P.In this study Investigation of effects of sildenafil citrate on some of the hematological parameters in the early phase of wound healing in diabetic rats was aimed in this study. Total 30 rats were used in the study. Rats were divided into three groups equal in number (control-non diabetic, diabetic and diabetic+Sc). While no treatment was given to the control-non diabetic and diabetic groups, sildenafil citrate was given to the diabetic+Sc group intraperitoneally with a dosage of 0.7 mg/kg/day dosage for 3 days after creating wounds: under ketamine anesthesia, a circular, full thickness, standard wound was created on the back of each rat by using a 0.8 cm sterile punch. Cardiac blood was drawn in tubes containing EDTA from each group before the creation of wounds and on days 1, 2 and 3 following the creation of wounds. Differential leukocyte counts were determined in blood samples containing anticoagulant. For this purpose, blood smears were prepared from blood samples and stained with Giemsa method. It was found that, while neutrophil counts increased in all the groups during the wound-healing periods with the increasing number of days, lymphocyte counts reduced and in control and Sc+diabetic groups, monocyte counts increased. As a result, it was concluded that Sc plays an important role in eliminating the pressure on the cellular activities in the early period of wound healing and continuance of the inflammatory process and wound healing within normal limits and also that this could be demonstrated with hematological analyses.Article Evaluating the Effect of the Treatment of Doramectin on Some Biochemical Parameters in Goats Naturally Infected With Gastrointestinal Nematodes(Academic Journals inc, 2010) Ceylan, E.; Ragbetli, C.; Tanritanir, P.The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of doramectin applied once in an optimum dose on stomach-intestine nematodes on goats naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. Alto to study the effect of the doramectin application on the clinically important biochemical parameters, electrolytes, minerals, vitamin B-12 levels and enzyme activities of goats were affected or not after anthelmentic drug application. For this purpose, the stools in 45 goals between 1-3 year were chosen in Van province and subjected to Fulleborn saturated salt solution method. Thirty goats with gastrointestinal nematodes constituted treatment group and they were doramectin applied (group I). Other 15 goats with gastrointestinal nematodes chose as control group (group II) was not Doramectine applied. Taking stool samples goats with Doramectin treatment and from control group on the 0, 7 and 14 days of application in gram stools, the number of eggs (EPG) were analyzed by modified McMaster method and treatment efficiency was a investigated. After coprocultures, goats were determined to be infected with Trichostrongylus sp., Nematodirus sp., Ostertagia sp., Marshallagia sp., Haemonchus sp. and Oesphagostomum sp. The results demonstrated that Fe, Albumin and hemoglobin levels statistically increased in treatment group in comparison with control group (p<0.05); a significant change in IBP, Ferritin, ALT, AST, total protein, P, Ca, Na and K levels was not observed and minor increases along with the treatment related to time in vitamine B-12, ALP and Mg levels occurred. It was concluded that in goats, one dose of 0.2 mg kg(-1) of subcutaneous doramectin was efficient 100% and no side-effect was observed.Article Evaluation of a Mixture of Thiopental-Guafinesine and Sevoflurane Anesthesia in Horses(Academic Journals inc, 2009) Atasoy, N.; Mercan, N.; Atalay, C.; Bayram, E.; Tas, A.The anesthetic and cardiopulmonary effects of a combination of continuous intravenous infusion using a mixture of 6 g L-1 thiopental-75 g L-1 guafinesine-3 mg L-1 metedomidine (0.30 mL/kg/h) and Oxygen-Sevoflurane (OS) anesthesia (TGM-OS anesthesia) in horses were evaluated. The concentration of sevoflurane (Sevo) required maintaining surgical anesthesia was around 1.5% in TGM-OS and 3.3% in OS anesthesia. Mean Arterial Blood Pressure (MABP) was maintained at around 77 mm Hg under TGMOS anesthesia, while dobutamine (0.43 +/- 0.13 mu g kg(-1)) infusion was necessary to maintain MABP at 60 mmHg under OS anesthesia. No apparent complication was observed during and after anesthesia in all cases. Recovery from anesthesia tinder TGM-OS anesthesia was very calm and smooth. The times required for the horse to return both sternal and standing position in group under TGM-OS anesthesia tended to be shorter than group under OS anesthesia which statistical differences were p<0.05 and p<0.01, respectively. Thiopental Guafinesine-Metedomidine and Oxygen-Sevoflurane anesthesia (TGM-OS anesthesia) may be useful for prolonged equine anesthesia because of its minimal cardiopulmonary effects and good recovery from anesthesia.Article General Situation of Beekeeping in the Eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey and Arima Model With the Help of Long-Term Analysis(Academic Journals inc, 2010) Koc, B.; Terin, M.; Ceylan, M.; Dagistan, E.With this study, the overall situation of beekeeping in Eastern and possible future cases in light of the available data reveals, the problem of identifying and developing some proposals aimed. This study presents a study of the current status (During the 1991-2005 period) and 15-year trend of beekeeping in the Eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey. Study has indicated the current situation of beekeeping. At this stage, a simple proportional tables, simple index, chain index and an average annual growth rate of such analysis is used. The long-term trend analysis for the prediction of the future, the ARIMA Model Used. The 17.05% of total honey production of Turkey is produced in this region and it contains 18.33% of the total bee hives. There are a total of 4.027 villages and 841.000 beehives in the Eastern Anatolian Region producing 14.116 tons honey. Honey production per bee hive is close to the Turkish average (16.7 kg). In the 1991-2005 period, the annual average increase in the number of hives number was -2.43%; honey production decreased by -1.86% and wax production was reduced by -0.94%. According to ARMA analysis, the honey production in 2005 of 14 thousand tons, 14.6 thousand tons in 2020 would be approximately estimated. In the long term trend analysis, it was found that if honey production continues with the current techniques and information level of the farmers, no development will be achieved in honey and wax production in the long term.Article The Influence of Scale on the Profitability of Honey Beekeeping Enterprises in Eastern Part of Turkey(Academic Journals inc, 2008) Yildirim, Ibrahim; Agar, SinanThe aim of this study was to compare the profitability of 58 small, medium and large-scale beekeeping enterprises in Bahcesaray, a town in Van Province, Turkey. The data, from the 2002 production period, was updated in 2005 using the agriculture wholesale price index. Honey yield per modern beehive was 10.72 kg. The single most important cost item in the total production cost was the permanent labour costs, which represented 31.42% of the total. The economic profitability rate increased according to enterprise size being the lowest with 1.42% for small-scale and the highest with 3.77% for large-scale enterprises. The Coob-Douglas production function test showed that by increasing the major inputs one-fold, the large scale enterprsises could increase the honey quantity 1.73 times against 1.29 times of small-scale enterprises.Article Investigation of the Effects of Carrying Heavy Load on Prooxidation/Antioxidant Status and Vitamin D3 in Healthy Horses(Academic Journals inc, 2009) Ceylan, E.; Dede, S.; Deger, Y.; Yoeruek, I.The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of carrying heavy load for a long time on lipid peroxidation (MDA: malondialdehyde), NO2 (nitrite), NO3 (nitrate), antioxidants (GSH: reduced glutathione, retinol, alpha-tocopherol) and vitamin D-3 in healthy horses. Blood samples from seventeen native 3-5 years age and 450-500 kg live weight Anatolian horses carried a load which comprised at least 30% of their body weight and for 4 h on mountainous terrain (hard working) were evaluated. Blood samples were collected in the morning before the animals started to carrying load and immediately after they finished carrying (working). It is observed that the level of MDA, NO2 and NO3 increased significantly (p<0.05) after working. While GSH concentration, increased after working; levels of retinol, alpha-tocopherol and vitamin D-3 levels decreased significantly (p<0.05). On the other hand, the vitamin D-3 levels were affected by hard working as other lipid soluble vitamins. There were a correlation between the physiological response to hard-working and some oxidant markers in healthy-hard working horses. These observations provide evidence that hard-working increases oxygen consumption and cause a disturbance of intracellular prooxidant-antioxidant homeostasis.Article Seroprevalence of Q Fever in Cattle and Sheep in the East of Turkey(Academic Journals inc, 2009) Ceylan, Ebubekir; Berktas, Mustafa; Keles, Ihsan; Agaoglu, ZahitThe present study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of antibodies to C. burnetii in cattle and sheep in the east of Turkey. Serum samples collected randomly from 92 cattle and 92 sheep were examined by ELISA (Vircell-SL, Spain) to detect IgG antibodies against C. burnetii phase II antigen. Seropositivity was observed in 16.3% of the cattle and in 5.4% of the sheep. Coxiellosis has an important seropositivity in both cattle and sheep and it can cause serious health problem in humans living in Eastern Turkey.
