Article Acupuncture and Hypnotic Suggestions in the Treatment of Non-Organic Male Sexual Dysfunction(Scandinavian University Press, 1997) Aydin, S; Ercan, M; Caskurlu, T; Tasci, AI; Karaman, I; Odabas, O; Sevin, GWe have examined the effects of acupuncture and hypnotic suggestions, and compared them with placebo in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction with no detectable organic cause. The study comprised 15 men (mean age 36.7 +/- 10.43 years) who received acupuncture treatment, 16 men (mean age 38.4 +/- 10.75 years) who underwent hypnosis (mean age 35.3 +/- 11.52 years) and 29 men (mean age 36.2 +/- 11.38 pears) who served as controls. They were interviewed periodically; the patients' reports were verified by interviewing their partners. Men who received placebo had a 43-47% improvement in sexual function, while the rates of improvement in the treated groups were higher, but not significantly so. The success rates of acupuncture and hypnotic suggestions were 60% and 75%, respectively. Although the improvement was nor statistically significant, treatment with acupuncture could be used as an adjuvant therapy in non-organic male sexual dysfunction. The only treatment superior to placebo seemed to be hypnosis. A more effective treatment may be obtained by combining these therapeutic modalities, but this needs further study.Article Acute Intoxications Among Turkish Children(Edizioni Minerva Medica, 2018) Kizilyildiz, Baran S.; Karaman, Kamuran; Ozen, Selvi; Uner, AbdurrahmanBACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics, outcomes and clinical features of acute intoxications among children in Van region of Turkey. METHODS: All cases with a diagnosis of acute intoxication admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Department of the Yuzuncu Yil University of Van from June 1, 2010 to November 30, 2011 were evaluated. We retrospectively examined the medical records for demographical and etiological characteristics of patients below 17 years of age. RESULTS: A total of 239 intoxications were recorded. The majority of patients were under 5 years of age. Pharmaceutical agents were identified in 137 (57.3%) patients. Antidepressants with a majority of tricyclic antidepressants were the most common drugs (29.9%). Non-pharmaceutical agents were identified in 102 (42.6%) patients, 38.2% of which were insecticides-pesticides following by plants (25.4%) and carbon monoxide (17.6%). The majority (93.8%) of cases were accidental poisonings. Fourteen cases of intoxications occurred as suicide attempts and 85.7% (N.=12) of those patients were girls. Of all cases, gastric lavage was performed in 36.4% and activated charcoal administration in 53%. After hospitalization, only 23 (9.6%) of all patients received specific treatment besides symptomatic treatment. Specific treatments involved hemodialysis and antidotes such as biperiden, ethanol, atropine, neostigmine and pralidoxime. During the study period, one patient died due to acute intoxication of pesticide. The mortality rate was 0.4%. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that pharmaceuticals were the most common cause of acute intoxications. While, insecticides-pesticides and plants were the leading non-pharmaceutic agents. Our data is important because it is one of few original reports on children with intoxication in Eastern Turkey.Article Adenocarcinoma of the Larynx: a Case Report With Histochemical and Immunohistochemical Studies(2004) Bayram, I.; Ugraş, S.; Kiriş, M.; Reçber, D.Adenocarcinomas constitute a histologically diverse group of rare laryngeal neoplasms accounting in aggregate for less than 1% of all laryngeal carcinomas. Adenocarcinoma of the larynx "not otherwise specified" (NOS) is a very uncommon neoplasia, but it shows a high degree of malignancy. We report a case of adenocarcinoma "NOS" arising in the larynx of a 60-year-old man. Histologically, the tumor tissue was composed of only adenocarcinoma component. Histochemically, the adenocarcinoma cells demonstrated Alcian blue pH: 2.5 and PAS reactivity, but did not include argentaffin and argyrophil granules. Immunohistochemical studies revealed negative reactivity for desmin, HMB45 and NSE. S-100 and chromogranin was focally positive, cytokeratin was diffusely positive.Article Age-Related Differences in Normal Corneal Topography(Slack inc, 2004) Topuz, H; Ozdemir, M; Cinal, A; Gumusalan, YBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare age-related differences in the corneal topography of a normal population using a computerized corneal topography system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The randomized comparative study included 240 eyes of 120 subjects with normal corneas. Subjects were divided into six age groups: 5 to 10 years (group 1), 11 to 20 years (group 2), 21 to 30 years (group 3), 31 to 40 years (group 4), 41 to 50 years (group 5), and 51 years or older (group 6). Average corneal power and corneal astigmatism were examined. An average corneal topography map was constructed and the astigmatism pattern was determined in each age group. RESULTS: Average corneal power values were 41.64 +/- 0.85 diopters (D), 42.35 +/- 0.90 D, 42.63 +/- 0.99 D, 42.94 +/- 0.93 D, 43.38 +/- 0.77 D, and 43.53 +/- 0.88 D in groups 1 to 6, respectively (P <.001). Mean astigmatism values were similar in all age groups (P = .225). Younger subjects had with-the-rule astigmatism, but older subjects showed a shift to oblique or against-the-rule astigmatism. The averaged maps of groups 1 to 3 showed a vertical bow-tie pattern, but the central steep area gradually extended horizontally and it became a round configuration in groups 4 to 6. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the normal cornea becomes steeper in the horizontal line and superior vertical quadrant and shifts from with-the-rule to against-the-rule astigmatism, but the amount of physiological corneal astigmatism does not change with age.Article Alstrom Syndrome With Acanthosis Nigricans: a Case Report and Literature Review(Medecine Et Hygiene, 2011) Akdeniz, N.; Bilgili, S. Gunes; Aktar, S.; Yuca, S.; Calka, O.; Kilic, A.; Kosem, M.Alstrom syndrome with acanthosis nigricans: a case report and literature review: Alstrom syndrome (AS) is a very rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder that can lead to infantile-onset dilated cardiomyopathy, blindness, hearing impairment, obesity, diabetes, hepatic and renal dysfunction. AS is caused by mutations in the ALMS I gene, which is located at chromosome 2p13. The life span of patients with AS rarely goes beyond an age of 40 years. There is no specific therapy for AS, but early diagnosis and intervention may moderate the progression of the disease and may improve the length and quality of the patient's life. We report a 10 year-old boy presenting with Alstrom Syndrome and acanthosis nigricans.Article Alström Syndrome With Acanthosis Nigricans: a Case Report and Literature Review(2011) Akdeniz, N.; Gunes Bilgili, S.; Aktar, S.; Yuca, S.; Calka, O.; Kilic, A.; Kosem, M.Alström syndrome (AS) is a very rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder that can lead to infantile-onset dilated cardiomyopathy, blindness, hearing impairment, obesity, diabetes, hepatic and renal dysfunction. Histologically, the tumor cells were in a typical alveolar pattern, and showed a cartilaginous tissue differentiation in some areas of the tumor mass. This tumor examined by avidin-biotin-peroxidase method was found to be positive for myoglobin. The diagnosis of undifferentiated alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma was based on the results of histopathology and immunohistochemistry.Article Amniotic Fluid Levels of Selected Trace Elements and Heavy Metals in Pregnancies Complicated With Neural Tube Defects(Wiley, 2020) Ovayolu, Ali; Ovayolu, Gamze; Karaman, Erbil; Yuce, Tuncay; Ozek, Murat A.; Turksoy, Vugar A.The aims of this study were to determine the levels of trace elements and heavy metals, namely aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), molybdenum (Mo), cadmium (Cd), tin (Sn), antimony (Sb), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb), in the amniotic fluid of pregnant women, and to investigate their relationship with neural tube defects (NTDs). The study included 36 pregnant women whose fetuses were complicated with NTDs (study group) and 39 pregnant women with unaffected healthy fetuses (control group), who were matched for body mass index and gestational weeks. The amniotic fluid levels of trace elements and heavy metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and compared between the two groups. Significantly lower mean levels of Zn and Mo and significantly higher levels of Al, Sn, Sb, and Hg in the study group than in the healthy control group were observed, which implied that these elements are possibly correlated with risk factors for the occurrence of NTDs. In contrast, there were no significant differences in the levels of Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb between the groups (P >= .05).Article An Analysis of Seven Infants With Brachmann-De Lange Syndrome, of Whom Two Identical Twin Sisters(Medecine Et Hygiene, 2001) Çaksen, H; Kurtoglu, S; Cesur, Y; Öztürk, AAn analysis of seven Infants with Brachmann-de Lange syndrome, of whom two identical twin sisters: Brachmann-de Lange syndrome (BDLS) is characterized by typical facial features, intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, microbrachycephaly, hirsutism and limb anomalies. Here, we reviewed the findings of seven infants with BDLS, of whom two were identical twin sisters of normal parents. All of the infants' parents were normal, and no consanguinity between the parents was noted although the ratio of consanguineous marriages is very high (21.1%) in Turkey. It is well known that most cases of BDLS are sporadic, some cases of this disorder are inherited in an autosomal dominant trait. Our findings suggested that familial cases of BDLS were infrequent, and vast majority of cases appeared to be sporadic and the occurrence of the syndrome in the identical twin sisters of normal parents was also thought a heterogeneity in this condition, overlapping with other conditions and syndromes as mentioned by Fryns et al. (6).Article Anti-Fibrogenic Effects of Captopril and Candesartan Cilexetil on the Hepatic Fibrosis Development in Rat - the Effect of At1-R Blocker on the Hepatic Fibrosis(Elsevier Gmbh, 2003) Tuncer, I; Ozbek, H; Ugras, S; Bayram, IBackground/Aim: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin II (AT-II) have been suggested to play an important role in liver fibrogenesis. There is a significant relationship between inheritance of hightened expression of transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) and AT-II and the development of progressive hepatic fibrosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of captopril. an ACE inhibitor and candesartan cilexetil, an AT-II type I receptor (AT1-R) blocker, on liver fibrosis induced in rats by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) administration. Methods: rats were divided into 4 experimental groups: The first group was given CCl4 alone; the second was given both CCl4 and captopril (100 mg(.)kg(-1.)day(-1)); the third was given both CCl4 and candesartan cilexetil (8 mg(.)kg(-1.)day(-1)); fourth group was given 0.9% NaCl only. Seven weeks after initiating the treatment. indices of fibrosis were assessed. Results: Candesartan cilexetil treatment significantly reduced the fibrosis development. These inhibitory effects were not observed in the captopril-treated group. The mean fibrosis score was significantly lower in the CCl4/candesartan group compared with the group applied to CCl4 alone and the group applied to CCl4/captopril. Similarly, the number of alpha-smooth muscle actin positive cells was markedly suppressed by candesartan treatment. Conclusions: The results suggest that AT-II plays a pivotal role in hepatic fibrogenesis and candesartan significantly attenuates the progression of liver fibrosis. This drug may provide an effective new strategy for prevention of liver fibrosis. Its effectiveness should be investigated in chronic liver disease associated with progressive fibrosis.Article Anti-Oxidant Activity in Measles(Maney Publishing, 2005) Cemek, M; Bayiroglu, F; Çaksen, H; Cemek, F; Dede, SBackground: Measles leads to serious complications, especially in developing countries. Aim: Our aim was to evaluate the effect of oxidative stress on the enzymatic and non-enzymatic anti-oxidant status in children with measles. Methods: Levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, ceruloplasmin, albumin, total bilirubin and uric acid were studied in 17 children with measles and 29 healthy controls. Results and conclusions: There was a statistically significant difference between the groups for all parameters. All of the anti-oxidant activities except for albumin level were increased in the study group. Both enzymatic and nonenzymatic anti-oxidant defence systems were affected in measles.Article Antimicrobial Activity of Various Extracts of Ocimum Basilicum L. and Observation of the Inhibition Effect on Bacterial Cells by Use of Scanning Electron Microscopy(African Networks Ethnomedicines, 2008) Kaya, Ilhan; Yigit, Nazife; Benli, MehlikaThe antimicrobial activities of chloroform, acetone and two different concentrations of methanol extracts of Ocimum basilicum L. were studied. These extracts were tested in vitro against 10 bacteria and 4 yeasts strains by the disc diffusion method. The results indicated that the methanol extracts of O. basilucum exhibited the antimicrobial activity against tested microorganisms. While the chloroform and acetone extracts had no effect, the methanol extracts showed inhibition zones against strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella sp., Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and two different strains of Escherichia coli. The cells of microorganisms, which were treated and untreated with plant extracts, were observed by using the scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the treated cells were damaged.Article Antioxidant Defense System Parameters in Isolated Fish Hepatocytes Exposed To Bisphenol a - Effect of Vitamin C(Akademiai Kiado Zrt, 2016) Kaya, Ozlem; Kaptaner, BurakIn this study, isolated hepatocytes of pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi) were exposed to bisphenol A (BPA) at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, and 200 mu M for 24 h. Moreover, an in vitro antioxidant concentration of vitamin C (50 mu M) was administrated to the culture medium along with the BPA exposures. Next, the antioxidant defense system parameters were analyzed. According to the results, the highest concentration of BPA (200 mu M) proved to be severely toxic for the cells. The increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), the fluctuated activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and the decreased content of reduced glutathione (GSH) were compared to the control group after the BPA exposures. Vitamin C co-administration was found to cause further increases in the SOD, GPx, and GST activities in some of the experimental groups and vitamin C could not restore the GSH content. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were observed to be unaffected in all exposure groups. These results show that BPA causes alterations in the antioxidant defenses of the isolated fish hepatocytes. In addition, vitamin C co-administration along with BPA was found to be non-protective against BPA-induced oxidative stress, consequently, aggravated a negative BPA impact.Article Aortic Valve Rupture Due To High-Voltage Electrical Injury: Case Report(2004) Güler, N.; Özkara, C.; Tuncer, M.; Güntekin, Ü.; Kocabas, S.In the heart, the most common sequelae after electrical injury are myocardial contusion and arrhythmias. A case is presented of segmental ventricular dysfunction and severe aortic regurgitation due to laceration of the right coronary cusp of the aortic valve caused by electrical injury. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of valvular rupture due to electrical injury. © Copyright by ICR Publishers 2004.Article Are Serum Mac 2-Binding Protein Levels Elevated in Esophageal Cancer? a Control Study of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients(Hindawi Ltd, 2018) Cobanoglu, Ufuk; Mergan, Duygu; Dulger, Ahmet Cumhur; Celik, Sebahattin; Kemik, Ozgur; Sayir, FuatObjective. Elevated serum Mac 2-binding protein (M2BP) levels have been observed in some cancers. As far as we know, its importance has not been investigated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The investigated problem of this study was to evaluate whether there was a difference between ESCC patients and the control group in terms of M2BP. Also, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of serum M2BP alone or in combination with the CEA for patients with ESCC. Material and Methods. Blood serum samples were collected from 50 healthy donors and 150 patients with ESCC. M2BP levels of all 200 samples were quantified by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). Patients who had been diagnosed with ESCC and did not have any other malignancies were enrolled to study. Results. The two groups did not significantly differ in terms of age (p > 0 05). In the control group, the mean serum M2BP level was 14.97 coproduct 3.46 ng/mL. The mean serum M2BP level of the ESCC patients was 176.65 +/- 22.14 ng/mL. The serum M2BP level was significantly higher in patients with ESCC than in the control group (p < 0 001). Gender was also comparable in both groups (p = 0 695). Conclusions. Our analysis demonstrated that this marker may be associated with the mechanism of the disease. Despite that serum M2BP is not a specific marker for ESCC, it can be used as an adjuvant biomarker for the diagnosis of ESCC.Article Aryepiglottic Fold and Subcutaneous Metastases From Breast Carcinoma(Assoc Royal Soc Scientifiques Medicales Belges, 2009) Avcu, S.; Izmirli, M.; Ozcan, H. Nursun; Sengul, I.; Lemmerling, M.We report the CT findings in a 77-year-old woman with left-sided aryepiglottic fold metastasis from breast cancer diagnosed 7 years previously. The lesion obliterated the left piriform sinus, had a lobulated contour and showed mild and heterogeneous enhancement on a post-contrast CT examination. Biopsy of the lesion revealed metastasis from poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, compatible with metastasis of the breast carcinoma. Before detection of the laryngeal lesion, a second primary tumor in the right ovary was diagnosed. After right oopherectomy, histopathology revealed clear cell adenocarcinoma. The patient also had multiple subcutaneous metastases and bilateral cervical lymphadenopathies. Chemotherapy was applied to the patient.Article Assessment of Liver Volume With Computed Tomography and Comparison of Findings With Ultrasonography(Springer, 2014) Bora, Aydin; Alptekin, Cem; Yavuz, Alpaslan; Batur, Abdussamet; Akdemir, Zulkuf; Berkoz, MehmetIn this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis on the liver volume. As investigating hepatic steatosis, we utilized computed tomography (CT) to determine the degree of steatosis and we utilized hepatobiliary ultrasonography (USG) for densitometry and correlation. As hepatosteatosis group, 35 patients over 18 years of age and whose abdominal CT scans were requested by several clinics and performed routinely were included in this study, and as control group, 40 healthy subjects without hepatosteatosis (clinically and radiologically) and correlated with hepatosteatosis group in terms of age and gender were included in this study. CT densitometry and liver attenuation index (LAI) of all individuals who participated in our study were calculated, and contrast images of patients were transferred to CT-Volume Software (Siemens Syngo Multimodality Workplace; Version VE52A). In this study, interactive and automated volume measurement techniques were used together. The volumes were measured separately in patient and control group. In this study for each stage in USG, there was found a direct correlation in terms of LAI and volume, and this correlation was statistically significant (p < 0.01). Furthermore, statistical significance between size and USG stage draws attention (p < 0.05). A significance relationship between USG stage and age could not be determined. As a result, we have reached the conclusion that CT densitometry can be used as an assistive technique along with USG to determine the degree of steatosis in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and there is a positive linear correlation between the liver size and volume, and liver volume increases in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.Article Assessment of Pretreatment Albumin-Bilirubin Grade in Pancreatic Cancer Patients With Liver Metastasis(Imprimatur Publications, 2020) Sakin, Aysegul; Sahin, Suleyman; Sakin, Abdullah; Atci, Muhammed Mustafa; Yasar, Nurgul; Arici, Serdar; Cihan, SenerPurpose: This study aimed to assess the effect of pretreat- ment albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score on treatment outcomes in pancreatic cancer (PC) patients with liver metastasis at the time of diagnosis treated with chemotherapy (CT) in the first-line setting. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 273 PC patients >= 18 years of age who had liver metastasis at the time of diagnosis and received CT in the first-line. ALBI score was calculated through the following formula; [(log10 bilirubin (mu mol/L)x0.66)+[albumin(g/l)x-0.0852]. Patients were strati- fied into 3 categories based on the ALBI score as follows; grade I:ALBI <=-2.60, grade II:-2.60-1.39. Results: A total of 273 patients, [180 (65.9%) men and 93 (34.1%) women], were evaluated. The median age was 60 years. ALBI grade was I in 45 (16.4%) patients, II in 156 (57.1%) patients, and III in 72 (26.5%) patients. Based on the ALBI grade, median progression-free survival (mPFS) was 9 months in grade I patients, 6 months in grade II patients, and 4 months in grade III patients (p=0.002), with median overall survival (mOS) durations of 12 months vs. 8 months vs. 5 months, respectively (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that ALBI grade II (HR,1.543) or III (HR,2.260) negatively affected survival. Conclusion: A higher pretreatment ALBI grade is related to worse OS and PFS in PC patients with liver metastasis treated with a first-line CT, and therefore it can help predict the treatment outcomes in these patients.Article Assessment of Testicular Cytology by Fine-Needle Aspiration and the Imprint Technique: Are They Reliable Diagnostic Modalities(Blackwell Science Ltd, 1997) Odabas, O; Ugras, S; Aydin, S; Yilmaz, Y; Atilla, MKObjective To investigate whether testicular cytology may be considered diagnostic in the evaluation of infertile men. Patients and methods Specimens of testicular tissue obtained either surgically (imprint smear) or through fine-needle aspiration (FNA) were used as a source of cytological smears; 58 testes from 24 men with azoospermia or severe oligospermia and from five men with advanced prostate cancer were evaluated cytologically and compared with the histological diagnosis. Results FNA caused no apparent trauma, The results from FNA smears generally agreed with the histological findings but four patients with no spermatozoa in the FNA smears were diagnosed histologically as hypospermatogenic and two others judged histologically as having Sertoli-cell-only (SCO) syndrome and spermatogenic arrest had detectable spermatozoa in their FNA smears. There was complete agreement between the results of imprint smears and histological findings in those patients with SCO syndrome and spermatogenic arrest, There were no evident differences in sperm counts between hypospermatogenesis and normal spermatogenesis on the imprint slides, but FNA smears detected this difference. Conclusion FNA of the testis is a relatively non-invasive and reproducible technique for evaluating qualitative and quantitative cytology. However, it is insufficient for diagnosing some testicular pathologies. Imprint smears supplement the histological diagnosis, especially if the histological slides are stained unsatisfactorily.Article Assessment of the Elasticity Properties of the Ascending Aorta in Patients With Subclinical Hypothyroidism by Tissue Doppler Imaging(Sbem-soc Brasil Endocrinologia & Metabologia, 2013) Yurtdas, Mustafa; Gen, Ramazan; Ozcan, Turkay; Aydin, Mehmet KasimObjective: We aimed to investigate whether aortic elastic properties were affected in subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) by using tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Subjects and methods: Forty-three patients with newly diagnosed SCH and forty-eight healthy controls were included to the study. Systolic and diastolic diameters of the ascending aorta were measured by M-mode transthoracic echocardiography, and the upper wall velocities of ascending aorta and mitral annulus velocities were measured by TDI. Aortic stiffness index (ASI) and aortic distensibility were computed using the formulas accepted in literature. Results: The clinical and demographic features of both groups were comparable. Aortic distensibility was significantly lower, and ASI was significantly higher in SCH patients than in controls. Systolic aortic upper wall velocity (Sao) was also significantly lower in SCH patients. Early (Eao) and late diastolic aortic upper wall (Aao) velocities did not differ between the two groups. Mitral annulus (Sm, Em, and Am) velocities were also similar between the groups. Sao was negatively correlated with ASI, and positively correlated with aortic distensibility. TSH level was positively correlated with ASI, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and negatively correlated with aortic distensibility and Sao. Conclusions: In this study, our results showed that SCH is associated with impaired elasticity of the ascending aorta. Elastic properties of the ascending aorta can be directly evaluated by the reproducibly measurement of the upper wall movements of the ascending aorta by TDI in SCH patients.
