Intermolecular hydrogen bonds and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions produce R-2(2)(10), R-4(4)(27) and R-4(4)(29) rings.Article Absorption Ratio of Treatment Couch and Effect on Surface and Build-Up Region Doses(Elsevier Science Bv, 2018) Tugrul, TaylanAim: In this study, at different fields, energies and gantry angles, treatment couch and rails dose absorption ratio and treatment couch effect on surface and build-up region doses were examined. Background: It is assumed that radiation attenuation is minimal because the carbon fiber couches have low density and it is not generally accounted for during treatment planning. Consequently, it leads to a major dosimetric mistake. Materials and methods: Solid water phantom was used for relative dose measurement. The measurements were done using a Farmer ion chamber with 0.6 cc volume and a parallel plane ion chamber starting from surface with 1 mm depth intervals at 10 x 10 cm(2) field, SSD 100 cm. Measurements were taken for situations where the beams intersect the couch and couch rails. Results: Dose absorption ratio of carbon fiber couch obtained at gantry angle of 180 was 1.52%, 0.69%, 0.33% and 0.25% at different field sizes for 6 MV. For 15 MV, this ratio was 0.95%, 0.27%, 0.20% and 0.05%. The absorption ratio is between 3.4% and 1.22% when the beams intersect with couch rails. The couch effect increased surface dose from 14% to 70% for 6 MV and from 11.34% to 53.03% for 15 MV. Conclusions: The results showed that the carbon fiber couch increased surface dose during posterior irradiation. Therefore, the skin -sparing effect of the high energy beams was decreased. If the effect of couch is not considered, it may cause significant differences at dose which reaches the patient and may cause tissue problems such as erythema. (C) 2017 Greater Poland Cancer Centre. Although increased thyroid function was found, the gland was normal in ultrasonography (USG). Additionally, thyroid iodine uptake and Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy was normal. Abdomen USG detected a cystic pelvic mass in left ovary. A whole-body scan was performed 48 hours after oral ingestion of 29.6 MBq (0.8 mCi) 1-131 (iodine-131) revealed a round structure located to the left lower abdomen. Iodine uptake was detected in this cyst which was compatible with functional thyroid tissue demonstrated by SPECT/CT. The patient was underwent surgical operation and histopathology confirmed mature cystic teratoma. Accurate localization and depiction of thyroid tissue in ovary mass was provided with SPECT/CT.Article Acupuncture and Hypnotic Suggestions in the Treatment of Non-Organic Male Sexual Dysfunction(Scandinavian University Press, 1997) Aydin, S; Ercan, M; Caskurlu, T; Tasci, AI; Karaman, I; Odabas, O; Sevin, GWe have examined the effects of acupuncture and hypnotic suggestions, and compared them with placebo in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction with no detectable organic cause. The study comprised 15 men (mean age 36.7 +/- 10.43 years) who received acupuncture treatment, 16 men (mean age 38.4 +/- 10.75 years) who underwent hypnosis (mean age 35.3 +/- 11.52 years) and 29 men (mean age 36.2 +/- 11.38 pears) who served as controls. They were interviewed periodically; the patients' reports were verified by interviewing their partners. Men who received placebo had a 43-47% improvement in sexual function, while the rates of improvement in the treated groups were higher, but not significantly so. The success rates of acupuncture and hypnotic suggestions were 60% and 75%, respectively. Although the improvement was nor statistically significant, treatment with acupuncture could be used as an adjuvant therapy in non-organic male sexual dysfunction. The only treatment superior to placebo seemed to be hypnosis. A more effective treatment may be obtained by combining these therapeutic modalities, but this needs further study.Article Acute Intestinal Anisakiasis: Ct Findings(Univ Catholique Louvain-ucl, 2012) Ozcan, H. N.; Avcu, S.; Pauwels, W.; Mortele, K. J.; De Backer, A. J.Small bowel anisakiasis is a relatively uncommon disease that results from consumption of raw or insufficiently pickled, salted, smoked, or cooked wild marine fish infected with Anisakis larvae. We report a case of intestinal anisakiasis in a 63-year-old woman presenting with acute onset of abdominal complaints one day after ingestion of raw wild-caught herring from the Northsea. Computed tomography (CT) scanning demonstrated thickening of the distal small bowel wall, mucosa with hyperenhancement, mural stratification, fluid accumulation within dilated small-bowel loops and hyperemia of mesenteric vessels. In patients with a recent history of eating raw marine fish presenting with acute onset of abdominal complaints and CT features of acute small bowel inflammation the possibility of anisakiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal syndromes. METHODS: All cases with a diagnosis of acute intoxication admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Department of the Yuzuncu Yil University of Van from June 1, 2010 to November 30, 2011 were evaluated. We retrospectively examined the medical records for demographical and etiological characteristics of patients below 17 years of age. RESULTS: A total of 239 intoxications were recorded. The majority of patients were under 5 years of age. Pharmaceutical agents were identified in 137 (57.3%) patients. Antidepressants with a majority of tricyclic antidepressants were the most common drugs (29.9%). Non-pharmaceutical agents were identified in 102 (42.6%) patients, 38.2% of which were insecticides-pesticides following by plants (25.4%) and carbon monoxide (17.6%). The majority (93.8%) of cases were accidental poisonings. Fourteen cases of intoxications occurred as suicide attempts and 85.7% (N.=12) of those patients were girls. Of all cases, gastric lavage was performed in 36.4% and activated charcoal administration in 53%. After hospitalization, only 23 (9.6%) of all patients received specific treatment besides symptomatic treatment. Specific treatments involved hemodialysis and antidotes such as biperiden, ethanol, atropine, neostigmine and pralidoxime. During the study period, one patient died due to acute intoxication of pesticide. The mortality rate was 0.4%. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that pharmaceuticals were the most common cause of acute intoxications. While, insecticides-pesticides and plants were the leading non-pharmaceutic agents. Our data is important because it is one of few original reports on children with intoxication in Eastern Turkey.Article Acute Pancreatitis, Bacterial Translocation, and Different Octreotide Regimens: an Experimental Study(Springer, 2009) Gueler, Osman; Akturan, Saadet; Kisli, Erol; Dolapci, Istar; Caydere, Muzaffer; Akova, AtillaTo determine the effect of octreotide, octreotide with zinc, levamisole, and misoprostol on the bacterial translocation that develops in rats with acute pancreatitis (AP). A total of 36 rats were divided into six groups, each consisting of six rats. Only laparotomy was performed on the first group. Acute pancreatitis was performed on the second group. Octreotide was given to the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth groups. Octreotide, octreotide with zinc, levamisole, and misoprostol were given to groups III, IV, V, VI, respectively. Rats were euthanized 48 h after the occurrence of AP. Blood and mesenteric lymph node samples were collected for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Pancreatic tissue and terminal ileum were obtained for histopathological examinations. The severity of pancreatitis and mucosal damage of the terminal ileum was higher in group II than groups I, III, IV, V, and VI, histopathologically (P < 0.05). There wasn't a significant difference with respect to OA with Zn or L or M and OA group (P > 0.05). A significant difference was found in PCR positivity in blood and mesenteric lymph node between groups I and II (P < 0.05). In AP, administering octreotide alone significantly prevented the bacterial translocation by preventing mucosal damage. The zinc, levamisole, or misoprostol with octreotide did not influence the results.Article Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Due To Overdose Desferrioxamine: Report of a Child(2005) Atas, B.; Caksen, H.; Tuncer, O.; Oner, A.F.; Kirimi, E.; Akbayram, S.In this article, we present an 18-month-old girl with acute iron poisoning who died from acute respiratory distress syndrome due to overdose of desferrioxamine. A 22-year-old man with no previous cardiac complaints presented with dyspnea, palpitation, fatigue, and shortness of breath, all of which occurred after a football match. Transthoracic echocardiography showed an aneurysmal dilatation of the right sinus of Valsalva to the direction of the right ventricle. Color Doppler imaging showed a marked left-to-right turbulent flow from the aortic root to the right ventricle. Continuous Doppler imaging also revealed a continuous left-to-right systolodiastolic shunting. The patient was submitted to cardiovascular surgery for surgical repair.Article Acute Serious Thrombocytopenia Associated With Intracoronary Tirofiban Use for Primary Angioplasty(Hindawi Ltd, 2014) Yurtdas, Mustafa; Yaylali, Yalin Tolga; Aladag, Nesim; Ozdemir, Mahmut; Atay, Memis HilmiTirofiban, a specific glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor, may cause extensive thrombocytopenia with an incidence of 0.2% to 0.5%. We report the case of a 50-year-oldman who developed thrombocytopenia after tirofiban use (both intracoronary and peripheral) over hours and the successful management of this complication after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.Article Adenocarcinoma of the Larynx: a Case Report With Histochemical and Immunohistochemical Studies(2004) Bayram, I.; Ugraş, S.; Kiriş, M.; Reçber, D.Adenocarcinomas constitute a histologically diverse group of rare laryngeal neoplasms accounting in aggregate for less than 1% of all laryngeal carcinomas. Adenocarcinoma of the larynx "not otherwise specified" (NOS) is a very uncommon neoplasia, but it shows a high degree of malignancy. We report a case of adenocarcinoma "NOS" arising in the larynx of a 60-year-old man. Histologically, the tumor tissue was composed of only adenocarcinoma component. Histochemically, the adenocarcinoma cells demonstrated Alcian blue pH: 2.5 and PAS reactivity, but did not include argentaffin and argyrophil granules. Immunohistochemical studies revealed negative reactivity for desmin, HMB45 and NSE. S-100 and chromogranin was focally positive, cytokeratin was diffusely positive.Article Administration of Meloxicam To Cows Experiencing Dystocia Does Not Increase the Incidence of Retained Placenta(Georg Thieme Verlag, 2019) Kunz, F.; Koca, D.; Failing, K.; Wehrend, A.; Sendag, S.Objective The post partum use of analgesics in cows has increased in consequence to society's increased awareness of animal welfare. However, it is known that the post partum administration of a subset of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to cows may lead to an increased rate of retained placenta. Therefore, the aim of this study was clarify, whether a single administration of meloxicam to cows that experienced dystocia results in an increased rate of this disease. Material and methods The study was conducted in 63 Holstein-Friesian cows in 4 farms with random allocation into 2 groups: In animals of the treatment group (n = 27) a single subcutaneous injection of meloxicam (0.5 mg/kg) was administered within 2'8 hours after calving. The animals of the control group (n = 36) received the same volume of a bovine infusion solution (Amynin®, bovine infusion solution, Boehringer Ingelheim) subcutaneously. A clinical examination of the cows was performed on the day of parturition and on the 21st day post partum. Findings on the days in between were obtained by questioning of the farmers. The exact Fisher-test was calculated in order to test for statistical differences between the treatment and control groups. Results In cows of the treatment group, retained placenta was not observed more frequently than in cows of the control group. Conclusion and clinical relevance A single administration of meloxicam to cows that experienced dystocia does not increase the incidence of retained placenta. © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart - New York.Article Advances in Nanomaterial Based Optical Biosensing and Bioimaging of Apoptosis Via Caspase-3 Activity: a Review(Springer Wien, 2018) Khalilzadeh, Balal; Shadjou, Nasrin; Kanberoglu, Gulsah Saydan; Afsharan, Hadi; de la Guardia, Miguel; Charoudeh, Hojjatollah Nozad; Rashidi, Mohammad-RezaCaspase-3 plays a vital role in intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of programed cell death and in cell proliferation. Study Design: The participants of the Turkish Adult Risk Factor Study who have been examined in even years were last surveyed in August 2008. A total of 1,582 individuals were surveyed, which constituted half of the surviving participants of the overall cohort. Information on death was obtained from first-degree relatives and/or health personnel of local health offices. Survivors were evaluated by history, physical examination, and 12-lead electrocardiography. The cumulative follow-up was 56,700 person-years. Results: Of 1582 participants, 868 (431 men, 437 women) were examined, in 604 subjects information was gathered, and 47 participants (26 men, 21 women) were ascertained to have died. Twenty-two deaths were classified as being of coronary origin. Cumulative assessment of the entire cohort in the age range of 45-74 years disclosed coronary mortality to be 7.64 per 1000 person-years in men and 3.84 in women and persisted to be the highest among 30 European countries, whereas overall mortality declined at a greater proportion. Overall mean ages at death were deferred within a 12-year period by 7.4 years in men and 6 years in women, to 71.9 and 74.8 years, respectively. The extension of this mean survival was similar among urban-rural areas and geographic regions. Conclusion: Coronary mortality declined modestly, but life expectancy of Turkish adults rose by a mean of nearly seven years in the 12 years to 2003-08 without showing major differences in sex, urban-rural dwelling or geographic regions.Article Age-Related Changes in the Number of Mast Cells in the Avian Lymphoid Organs(Wiley-blackwell Publishing, inc, 2006) Karaca, T.; Yoruk, M.; Uslu, S.The distribution of mast cells (MCs) was studied in the lymphoid organs (thymus, bursa of Fabricius and spleen) of 0-, 7-, 21-, 30- and 120-day-old chickens, using light microscopic histochemical techniques. Tissues samples were obtained under deep anaesthesia from animals in five groups. Tissues were fixed in Mota's fixative (basic lead acetate) for 24 h and embedded in paraffin. Six-micrometre-thick sections were stained with toluidine blue in 0.5% aqueous solution at pH 1.0 for 5 min and Alcian blue/Safranine at pH 1.42 for 30 min. MCs were found in the organs, mostly associated with sinuses and blood vessels. A large increase in MCs was observed in both thymus and spleen of 21-day-old chickens compared with 0-, 7-, 30- and 120-day-old chickens. However, in the bursa of Fabricius, numbers of MCs were significantly higher in the 7-day-old group compared with other age groups. Safranine-positive MCs were not observed in all organs and age groups. These results showed age-related changes in the number of MCs in avian lymphoid tissues.Article Age-Related Differences in Normal Corneal Topography(Slack inc, 2004) Topuz, H; Ozdemir, M; Cinal, A; Gumusalan, YBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare age-related differences in the corneal topography of a normal population using a computerized corneal topography system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The randomized comparative study included 240 eyes of 120 subjects with normal corneas. Subjects were divided into six age groups: 5 to 10 years (group 1), 11 to 20 years (group 2), 21 to 30 years (group 3), 31 to 40 years (group 4), 41 to 50 years (group 5), and 51 years or older (group 6). Average corneal power and corneal astigmatism were examined. An average corneal topography map was constructed and the astigmatism pattern was determined in each age group. RESULTS: Average corneal power values were 41.64 +/- 0.85 diopters (D), 42.35 +/- 0.90 D, 42.63 +/- 0.99 D, 42.94 +/- 0.93 D, 43.38 +/- 0.77 D, and 43.53 +/- 0.88 D in groups 1 to 6, respectively (P <.001). Mean astigmatism values were similar in all age groups (P = .225). Younger subjects had with-the-rule astigmatism, but older subjects showed a shift to oblique or against-the-rule astigmatism. The averaged maps of groups 1 to 3 showed a vertical bow-tie pattern, but the central steep area gradually extended horizontally and it became a round configuration in groups 4 to 6. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the normal cornea becomes steeper in the horizontal line and superior vertical quadrant and shifts from with-the-rule to against-the-rule astigmatism, but the amount of physiological corneal astigmatism does not change with age.Article Alstrom Syndrome With Acanthosis Nigricans: a Case Report and Literature Review(Medecine Et Hygiene, 2011) Akdeniz, N.; Bilgili, S. Gunes; Aktar, S.; Yuca, S.; Calka, O.; Kilic, A.; Kosem, M.Alstrom syndrome with acanthosis nigricans: a case report and literature review: Alstrom syndrome (AS) is a very rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder that can lead to infantile-onset dilated cardiomyopathy, blindness, hearing impairment, obesity, diabetes, hepatic and renal dysfunction. AS is caused by mutations in the ALMS I gene, which is located at chromosome 2p13. The life span of patients with AS rarely goes beyond an age of 40 years. There is no specific therapy for AS, but early diagnosis and intervention may moderate the progression of the disease and may improve the length and quality of the patient's life. We report a 10 year-old boy presenting with Alstrom Syndrome and acanthosis nigricans.Article Alström Syndrome With Acanthosis Nigricans: a Case Report and Literature Review(2011) Akdeniz, N.; Gunes Bilgili, S.; Aktar, S.; Yuca, S.; Calka, O.; Kilic, A.; Kosem, M.Alström syndrome (AS) is a very rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder that can lead to infantile-onset dilated cardiomyopathy, blindness, hearing impairment, obesity, diabetes, hepatic and renal dysfunction.
