Therefore, this study's isolation of a novel bacterium from a contaminated stream in Fatsa, Ordu, Turkey, adept in degrading 2,2-dichloropropionic (of 2,2-DCP) is a welcome endeavor. The ability of the bacterial isolate to utilize 2,2-DCP as the sole carbon and energy source was discovered when the bacterium was observed to grow well on liquid minimal media containing 20 mM of 2,2-DCP, showing a doubling time of 14.2 h. The following genetic and biochemical characterizations revealed that the 16S rRNA sequence of the fatsa001strain is identical (99%) to Pseudomonas fluorescence, after which the sequence was deposited in the NCBI GenBank as Pseudomonas sp. strain fatsa001 (MN098848). The halogen-degrading ability of the P. fluorescens fatsa001 bacterium was again confirmed by the PCR data, which showed the presence of a conserved group of amino acids from the group I dehalogenase gene. It worth mentioning here that this is the first report on a P. fluorescence bacterial strain with the ability to degrade toxic 2,2-DCP. The detoxification ability of this bacterium envisages its practicality as an in situ environmental bioremediation agent.Article 2,6-Bis((e) and Its Metal(Ii) Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Biological Activity, and Photoluminescence Features(Wiley-v C H verlag Gmbh, 2013) Gulcan, Mehmet; Zengin, Huseyin; Celebi, Metin; Sonmez, Mehmet; Berber, IsmetThe preparation, characterization, magnetic measurements, antimicrobial activity, and photoluminescence properties of a number of metal complexes with a Schiff base ligand derived from 2, 6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and 1-amino-5-benzoyl-4-phenyl-1H-pyrimidine-2-thione are reported herein. UV/Vis spectra and magnetic measurements infer square planar stereochemistry for Pd-II and Pt-II complexes, and octahedral arrangement for the other metal complexes. The compounds results in intense emission (where (max) = 402 nm) upon irradiation by UV light. The photoluminescence quantum yields and long excited-state lifetimes of the ligand and its complexes were calculated as 42% and 3.94 ns, respectively. The photoluminescence intensities and quantum yields of metal complexes changed upon complexation with various metal ions. The ligand and its complexes are of interest as organic emitting materials for electroluminescent devices. The complexes were additionally evaluated for in vitro the antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal strains. While Cu-II, Co-II, and Pt-II complexes have good antifungal efficiency against yeast (MICs, 80 gmL(-1)), only the complex [Cu(L)(AcO)]4H(2)O had effective and selective antimicrobial activity against all tested microorganisms with MIC values in the range of 40-80 gmL(-1), except for E. coli ATCC 4230. EMFs are known to affect bone metabolism and muscle tissue. However, their effects on bones and skeletal muscles are controversial, as some studies have reported positive effects while others have reported adverse effects. In this study, the effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) on bone biomechanics and skeletal muscle tissues were investigated in diabetic and healthy rats. Rats were exposed to 3.5 GHz RFR for 2 h per day for 30 days. Bone biomechanics measurements were taken to evaluate the effects of RFR on bone quality, flexibility and durability. The whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) was found to be 37 mW/kg. The results showed that RFR exposure had adverse effects on bone biomechanics, including decreased elasticity coefficient and Young's modulus, increased maximum displacement and decreased maximum force. However, oxidative stress parameters in diabetics were also altered by 3.5 GHz RFR to a greater extent than in healthy rats. In conclusion, 3.5 GHz RFR may have potential to alter bone quality and structural integrity including muscle oxidative stress parameters in rats. It should be emphasized that the observed changes were more obvious in diabetic rats. In addition, the changes observed in healthy and diabetic rats exposed to RFR showed a statistically significant difference according to the sham groups.Article 3d Location Optimization of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Base Stations in Next-Generation Cellular Networks and a New Meta-Heuristic Approach(Gazi Univ, Fac Engineering Architecture, 2021) Ozdag, RecepThe use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as mobile Base Stations (BSs) in wireless communication is emerging as an effective technique that should be used for the services planned in the next-generation cellular networks or in disaster situations. Currently, effective 3D placement of BS mounted on UAVs or Drones (Drone-BS), also called Low-altitude Air Platforms, in the defined area significantly increases the Quality of Service (QoS) of wireless communication. This study has been aimed to be performed dynamic deployments (location optimization) of Drone-BSs randomly distributed in the 3D plane in order to optimally cover the users in the urban environment according to the Air-to-Ground (ATG) model. Using new approaches based on the Electromagnetism-Like (EML) Algorithm and the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), which are widely used in the literature and are meta-heuristic, it was planned to be covered the maximum number of users on the ground by multiple Drone-BSs. In addition, Extensive-interval Optimal Fitness Search Algorithm (EOFSA-EML) and Discrete-interval Optimal Fitness Search Algorithm (DOFSA-EML) approaches were developed based on the EML algorithm. Based on comparison metrics for multiple Drone-BSs distributed by EOFSA-EML, DOFSA-EML, and Pure-WOA, it has been found that EML-based algorithms achieve optimal results compared to Pure-WOA.Article 4-Vinylpyridine Smart Nanoparticles With N-Isopropylacrylamide, 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate, Acrylic Acid, and Methacrylic Acid for Potential Biomedical Applications(Bentham Science Publ Ltd, 2011) Sahiner, Nurettin; Ozay, Ozgur; Aktas, NahitStimuli-responsive (pH, temperature and magnetic field) 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP)-based nanoparticles in copolymeric formulation with core-shell morphology were synthesized using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), acrylic acid (AAc), and methacrylic acid (MAc) as shell-forming monomers. Keeping the 4-VP ratio constant and varying the comonomer amounts produced particles with variant shell thickness. Multi-responsive p(4-VP)-based nanoparticles were further modified by reacting with different functional groups containing bromoalkanes by quaternization. These p(4-VP)-based particles were also utilized to include composite materials by encapsulating separately prepared magnetic ferrites. The obtained results of CsGeCl3 crystal were compared with the available theoretical and experimental results and have been found to be in good agreement with these results.Article Abdominal Hydatid Disease: Long-Term Results of Percutaneous Treatment(Blackwell Munksgaard, 2004) Etlik, O; Arslan, H; Bay, A; Sakarya, ME; Harman, M; Temizoz, O; Unal, OPurpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous treatment under sonographic guidance in abdominal hydatid cysts. Material and Methods: Fifty-two hydatid cysts in 33 patients were treated using a percutaneous approach under sonographic guidance. Forty-five cysts were located in the liver, 6 in the spleen, and I in the pancreas. Forty-nine cysts were type 1, and 3 were type II. Thirty-one cysts in 15 patients were treated with puncture and aspiration of the contents, injection of hypertonic saline solution, and respiration (PAIR); 15 cysts in 14 patients were treated with puncture, aspiration of cyst contents, injection of hypertonic saline solution, drainage, and injection of sclerosing agent (PAIDS); and 6 cysts in 4 patients were treated with puncture, aspiration of cyst contents, injection of sclerosing agent, and re-aspiration (mPAIDS). Hypertonic saline or alcohol was used as a scolicidal agent. The follow-up period was between 17 and 53 months. Results: A decrease in the dimensions of the cysts, solidification of the contents, and irregularity in the walls of cysts, all of which were considered signs of cure, were found in all patients. Recurrence was observed in one case and anaphylaxis in one. Conclusion: Percutaneous treatment of abdominal hydatid cysts is a safe, easily applicable, well-tolerated, and effective method.Article An Accelerated Radiotherapy Scheme Using a Concomitant Boost Technique for the Treatment of Unresectable Stage Iii Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer(Oxford Univ Press, 2005) Izmirli, M; Yaman, F; Buyukpolat, MY; Yoney, A; Unsal, MBackground: We designed a phase II trial for evaluation of the efficacy and tolerability of an accelerated concomitant boost radiotherapy scheme for the treatment of the patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: Thirty patients with unresectable stage IIIA/IIIB NSCLC were prospectively enrolled in this protocol. All patients were scheduled to receive 15 fractions of conventionai radiotherapy in doses of 1.8Gy, to a total of 27 Gy. For the last 10 treatment days, an accelerated concomitant boost schedule was started that was composed of 1.8 Gy/fraction/day, 5days/week to the large field and 1.8 Gy/fraction/day to the boost field 6 h apart, to a total dose of 63 Gy/35 fractions/5 weeks. Results: Median follow-up time was 13 months (range, 5-50 months; 3-year overall, disease-free, loco-regional disease-free and metastasis-free survivals were 23%, 19%, 19% and 23%, respectively). The most common acute toxicity was esophagitis in 31% of patients with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (RTOG/EORTC) criteria grade 1, and in 54% with grade 2. Radiation pneumonitis developed in 16% of patients with RTOG/EORTC grade 1. Three-year actuarial rate of late pulmonary and skin-subcutaneous toxicity were 12% and 16%, respectively. No late radiotherapy complications of spinal cord or esophagus were recorded. Conclusion: Overall survival, local control and freedom from local progression were comparable with the results reported with pure hyperfractionated radiotherapy. The overall rate of acute and late toxicity was acceptable.Article Accumulation and Tolerance of Pb in Some Bioenergy Crops(Hard, 2018) Celebi, Seyda Zorer; Ekin, Zehra; Zorer, Ozlem SelcukContamination of agricultural soil is a worldwide problem, with heavy metals being a major part of the concern. Bioenergy crop production is also a profitable phytoremediation strategy using biofuel crops for both utilization and remediation of contaminated soil. To investigate lead (Pb) accumulation and tolerance of three different energy crop cultivars, three-week-old healthy seedlings were grown in Hoagland solution supplemented with five different concentrations of Pb 0, 25, 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg. At the end of 30 days, Pb content and translocation, tolerance index, bioconcentration factor, and growth parameters of the plants were evaluated in the study. Results showed that increasing Pb concentrations did not affected the growth and development of Sunburst (Panicum virgatum L.) and Dincer (Carthamus tinctorius L.) cultivars. The highest Pb contents were also found in roots and shoots of Sunburst and Tarsan-1018 (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars. Dincer cultivar has a high ability to transfer Pb from root to shoot when compared to others. These results suggest that these cultivars may be good candidates for remediation of Pb-contaminated areas for use in biofuel production.Article The Activities of Gst Isozymes in Stomach Tissues of Female Obese Patients(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2020) Yilmaz, Can; Bulus, Hakan; Oguztuzun, Serpil; Cihan, Mehmethan; Fidan, CeylanObjectives: Obesity has become an important public health problem because of its increasing prevalence and relation with many diseases and mortality. Studies have shown its association with oxidative stress. In this study, the effect of obesity on total amount of thiol and some glutathione S-transferase (GST) isozymes were investigated which could serve as an important criteria in dose adjustment of some certain drugs in obese. Methods: The gastric tissues removed by gastrectomy operation from 29 morbid obese female patients were analysed for thiol levels and activities of total GST, GSTT1-1 and GSTM1-1. Patients were grouped according to age, presence of hypertension and/or diabetes, and family history. Results: The average total thiol was 131.22 (+/- 7.74) nmol/mg protein with no significant differences in between the groups. GSTT1 specific activities were about 20% higher in four groups: with ages over 35 years old, with hypertension, without diabetes and finally without family history, with respect to other groups. The differences between total GST and GSTM1 activity levels of experimental groups were not significant. Conclusions: This is the first study to compare activities of GST isozymes and total thiol content in the stomach tissues of obese female patients accompanying some common metabolic disorders, age and family history.Article Activity, Acute and Sub-Acute Toxicity and Safety Assesment of the Hydroalcholic Root Extract of Diplotaenia Turcica(Agricultural Research Communication Centre, 2018) Ozdek, U.; Basbugan, Y.; Yildirim, S.; Boga, M.; Firat, M.; Deger, Y.Diplotaenia turcica is widely utilized in conventional treatment in the east of Turkey. Due to the insufficient data on the safety profile, the acute and sub acute toxicity of Diplotaenia turcica was determined. Furthermore, total phenolic content, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of the extract were determined. The acute toxicity of hydroalcoholic root extract of Diplotaenia turcica (HREDT) was evaluated in mice after administration of single oral dose at the 5000 mg/kg (acute model) and rat after 28 days orally administration at the dose range of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg (subacute model). According to result, the LD50 value of HREDT was found to be greater than 5000 ing/kg. In sub acute toxicity study, no statistically significant differences were observed in the values of hematological and pathological parameters in comparison with control group. It was determined that the glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol and LDL levels exerted a significant effect depending on the HREDT doses. The results from the present study found out that HREDT did not produce any toxic effects or deaths in animals for both single and chronic administration. Additionally, HREDT showed moderate antioxidant activities and exhibited relatively notable total phenolic content.Article Acute Effects of Fenthion on Certain Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Various Tissues of Frogs (Rana Ridibunda)(Sage Publications inc, 2012) Kanter, Ahmet; Celik, IsmailThis study was aimed mainly to assess the effects of fenthion on certain oxidative stress biomarkers in various tissues of frogs (Rana ridibunda). Biomarkers selected for stress monitoring were malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant defense system (ADS) such as reduced glutathione (GSH) level, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in the liver, kidney, heart, and brain of frogs exposed to 10 and 20 ppm dosages of fenthion for 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. The results demonstrate an increase in MDA levels in selected tissues following exposure to both concentrations of fenthion. The ADS, GSH-Px, GST, SOD activities and GSH levels also fluctuated after 24, 48, 72, and 96 h in all the treatment groups compared with controls. From the evidence obtained here, it is concluded that the exposure of frogs to fenthion induced an increase in MDA combined with fluctuated ADS. This may reflect the potential role of these parameters as useful biomarkers for oxidative stress in amphibian species.Article The Acute Effects of Thymoquinone on Acute Peripheral Nerve Injury: an Experimental Study(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2016) Gulsen, Ismail; Ak, Hakan; Kara, Mikail; Gokalp, Abdulsemat; Akyol, Veysel; Kocak, Omer Faruk; Ragbetli, Murat CetinBACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute effects of thymoquinone (TQ) on acute nerve injury. METHODS: A rat model of crush injury of the sciatic nerve was used. Animals were divided into 3 groups: control, trauma, and TQ treatment groups (n=6 per group). Seven days after injury, sciatic nerve specimens were obtained from the site of the injury and analyzed histologically and stereologically. Axon diameter, myelin thickness, and axon density were measured. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in axon diameter, myelin thickness, or axon density among groups. CONCLUSION: TQ has no acute therapeutic effect on acute nerve injury.Article Acute Hepatitis-A Virus Infection as a Rare Cause of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis(Coll Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, 2021) Dogan, Ali; Demircioglu, Sinan; Ekinci, OmerHemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare disorder of the mononuclear phagocytic system, characterised by histiocyte and lymphocyte activation. It can be classified as primary and secondary HLH. Primary HLH usually presents in childhood, and is associated with gene mutations. Secondary HLH usually presents in adulthood, and is due to an underlying infection, autoimmune disease or malignancy. C.; Anlar, O.; Akbayram, S.; Caksen, H.Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) is a form of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) seen in summer months in Northern China to cause epidemics. This form of the disease, which is also sporadically observed in other countries, constitutes less than 5 % of GBS in Western countries. It usually develops with motor findings. No sensory findings are observed. In some of the cases, the severe impairments in tissues improve however slowly and inadequately. In the motor conduction studies of cases with AMAN, motor action potential values are lowered. On needle electromyography (EMG), motor unit potential (MUP) activity is diminished with spontaneous denervation findings. Investigations were conducted on nerve conduction of patients with GBS aged from 1 to 77 years. AMAN was detected in 25 of these patients. In our investigation, AMAN as a GBS variant was detected in 39.7 % of the patients. The conduction velocities of motor nerves were in normal ranges whereas combined muscle action potentials were significantly lower. No F response could be obtained. Although AMAN is a rare variant of GBS and shows different clinical courses, it has been brought under intense scrutiny since there is high prevalence of acute inflammatory neuropathies in our region (Tab. 1, Ref. 7). Cellulitis sometimes occurs as a result of bacterial superinfection. When caused by A-group Streptococci cellulitis may evolve into necrotizing fasciitis leading to necrosis of deep tissues. We have found treatment using parenteral antibiotics, intensive supplementary therapy and surgical debridement of necrotic tissues to be effective. A case of Staphylococcal necrotizing fasciitis in a neonate is reported. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors.Article Acute Phase Effect of Trichloroethylene Ingestion on Some Biological Markers in Dogs(Scientific Technical Research Council Turkey, 2000) Aslan, R; Tütüncü, M; Aslan, SO; Dündar, YTrichloroethylene (TE) is an environmental toxic solvent hazardous to human and domestic animals and well known in the industrial sector. The purpose of this study was to determine whether oral TE plays a role in lipid oxidation and tissue damage. Fourteen dogs were treated with an oral toxic dose of 0.5 ml/kg T.E. The acute changes that occurred in creatine kimase (CK), malondialdehyte (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were investigated in blood samples taken before application and 8, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours after treatment. SOD and GSH-Px activities decreased, protein, albumin and alcalen phosphate did not change and the others increased a and 24 h after the TE treatment. Forty-eight hours after the treatment, MDA, CK, albumin and AST increased, while SOD and GSH-Px decreased. Ail markers returned to their normal levels after 72 h. It was concluded that TE plays a role in oxidative stress and tissue damage in the acute phase, Repeated intake of oral TE can reach serious toxicity in domestic animals living around industial zones polluted with chemicals.
