A Postmodern and Post-Postmodern Analysis of the Loss of the Cultural and Universal Ethic Values in Elif Shafak's Honour (2011) and Jonathan Franzen's Freedom
Abstract
Elif Şafak and Jonathan Franzen are known for their novels in which they deal with the matters related to real world. They focus on the contextual concepts of human affairs, individual relationships, social problems and cultural and universal values like love, family, brotherhood and fraternity. While Elif Şafak feeds on postmodernist cultural values, Jonathan Franzen feeds on post-postmodernist merits. With a special focus on the theme of the loss of cultural and universal ethic values from a postmodern and post-postmodern perspective, the novel Honour (2011) by Elif Şafak and the novel Freedom (2010) by Jonathan Franzen will be analyzed in this thesis. Their works share common characteristics, as they both are about the stories of families who live in different cultural backgrounds and have different traditional contexts. These two writers discuss the decaying of family institution and the negative sides of social habits and the ignoring of such values like honesty, brotherhood, religion and justice with a realistic approach. Therefore, these novels serve as mirrors which reflect the affairs that cause to the loss of values mentioned above in the society. This thesis aims to examine and scrutinize 'how a postmodern novel differs from a post-postmodern novel and how they can be similar in terms of common cultural and ethical themes.
