Abstract

Objective: The cases of pulmonary hydatid cysts are frequently seen, especially in Eastern Anatolia Region because livestock breeding is the main source of life in the region. We aimed to discuss 176 patients operated for the diagnosis of pulmonary hydatid cysts in a 5-year period. Materials and Methods: The patients with hydatid cyst disease, who applied to our clinic, were evaluated in the light literature. Results: Hunderd and seventy-six patients were diagnosed with hydatid cysts clinically and radiologically between August 2003 and August 2008. The age range of the patients was 3-75 years with the mean age of 21 years. Thoracotomy was applied in all the patients. Cyst location was unilateral in 158 and bilateral in 18 of the patients. Fourteen patients also had a cyst in the liver. The cysts of 54% of the cases were perforated. Enucleation was performed in 5 cases; cystectomy, in 7 patients, and cystotomy+capitonagge, in the others. In the bilateral cases, the opposite side was operated 1-1.5 months after the first operation. Percutaneous drainage was applied in coordination with radiology department in the presence of hepatic hydatid cyst. Albendazole treatment was applied in all of the cases. Conclusion: No mortality was observed. Cystotomy+capitonagge is still the most valid method in pulmonary hydatid cyst cases because it is a method of preserving the parenchyma.
