The Effect of Religion on Fate, Fiction, and Reality in Muriel Spark’s Novels
Abstract
Bu çalışmada Muriel Spark'taki din olgusunun, The Comforters, The Driver's Seat ve Loitering with Intent romanlarındaki kader, kurgu ve gerçeklik temaları üzerindeki etkileri tartışılacaktır.
Muriel Spark is a Catholic author who started writing novels after her conversion. Like many authors who reflect their philosophies and beliefs in their works, Spark, too, adopted Catholicism and reflected it in a way of her own in her novels as an important element. In this study, the effects of religion on Fate, Fiction and Reality are discussed in Muriel Spark?s three selected novels; The Comforters, The Driver?s Seat and Loitering With Intent. As a result, Spark?s originally-configured belief, different from the traditional Catholic faith is determined to have an obvious effect on her plotting and creating the characters. It is also shown that some characters who are converted or are novelists in these novels bear many features of Spark?s own life and experience. While dealing with the subject of fate in her novels, Spark interprets its relation with the free will and tries to reflect her view of fate in the lives of extraordinary characters that she creates. Spark also brings different approaches to reality and fiction as a result of the interaction of her art and Catholic belief. Although the plots of these novels including supernatural elements do not reflect the cases which cannot probably be came across in the daily life, these provide the readers to identify the reality in different terms.Muriel Spark presents the striking samples of the continuous relations between the literature and the phenomena of religion which is an old theme in the human history. The analysis of Muriel Spark?s these three novels is important from the perspective of illustrating the remarkable effects of religious beliefs in the art of novel and creating an awareness in this respect for the readers.
